Default 2005 Jaguar S Type (V6 Base) rear diff

I have the whine in my rear differential- I tried a fluid exchange- still there with no change.

A mechanic told me that the rear diff was non-rebuild-able, that I would have to get one from a salvage yard or off of ebay-

This does not seem right to me- do they really not make rebuild kits, or sell the parts to rebuild?

I found rebuild kits for other model Jags, but not the S Type.

I can find plenty of jaguar rear diffs on ebay for around the $400 mark, but i'd rather have a rebuilt one with brand new bearings and parts than a used one that could start to whine at any time...

thoughts???

Thanks!

The BEARINGS are replaceable - you can use Lincoln LS bearings, however the ring and pinion (if that is the source of the whine) is not available. Jaguar sells the unit as a complete diff, and the LS ratios are different (because they never went to a 6spd ZF trans), so that will throw the car into restricted performance.

If you CONFIRM your ring and pinion are fine, then you can use a rebuild kit for a Lincoln LS. There's a lot of info I posted about the difference between the diffs, search I think in the cross reference thread. I'll take a look when I get home.

Take care,

George

Thanks for that info! Is there a way to determine if the ring and pinion are good without spending a butt load of money having a mechanic break open the case?

Thanks,

Jordan
