CATS confusion
Where to begin? I have a 2001 S-Type 6 cyl 3.0L 80,000 miles with a cats suspension. The closest authorized service is a couple of hundred miles away so I took the car to the only local guy and he told me my rear shocks were leaking pretty bad and needed replacing. So he located a pair of shocks 900 bucks he put those on and my Cats System Fault light went on. So then I called the closest auth. service and they told me that the shocks had to be ordered using the vin number and that the computer had to be powered down new shocks put on and then be recalibrated by the computer. They also said that now that the shocks are in full extention mode I would have to have it trailered to thier shop hundreds of miles away. So I told the local guy to just put the old ones back on. Browsing thru this forum I've seen that I can disable CATS and use regular shocks. Buy the way the dealer estimate for new shocks was 1600.00 plus it would cost 300.00 to transport. This car is 12 years old and I don't want to sink that kind of money into it. When I talked to the dealer he said disabeling Cats would cause a lot of other problems. I'm curious how many of you guys have disabled cats and have had no problems. Also what would be a medium price ranged shock to replace them with.
I have disabled CATS with no problems for about a year now. All I did was unplug the harness in the trunk. I have Bilstein Sport struts on all 4 corners and would recommend them. They run about $400 for all 4.
