Changing engine ecu

Ok this is for you hi tec guys and know this has been covered a lot but i.m stuck after fitting second hand engine ECU did not keep block code from old one . So cannot get correct chassis number into it . Only way I can see is give it too Jag dealer which out my price range or ECU reprogramming specialist .anyone think of another way ?

Find a local Jaguar specialist on the south coast that has Jaguar main dealer level equipment.

Why was the ECM swapped out to begin with?

What year is the car? In a thread from a few months ago, I found a training guide from Jaguar stating that a used ECM cannot be transferred to another vehicle. Once the VIN is written to the ECM, it cannot be changed. The security system will not accept this VIN mismatch and will not allow the engine to start. Supposedly even the dealer cannot override this. The only option for replacement is to install a new ECM, not a used one.

I can’t remember if this applies to early or late models, or all of them. I’ll look for this info if you can please let us know what year you have.

Found it. It appears this limitation only applies to ‘99-‘02 models. Details here:

I've fitted used PCM's to 99 & 01 S-Type's, and an 04 X350, cars start and drive fine now.

But, you need to program the replacement module to the car with IDS or SDD, because of the PATS immobiliser.

roysrovers 04-27-2019 01:13 AM

There is a block code that you need too upload from old ECM or get from jaguar the car does run I program the immobilizer but still has same fault no comuation too ECM and running like in limp mode it a 03 2.5

Well at least you have the Denso that can be reflashed.

Why has it been swapped? Almost every time they're said to be faulty they aren't...

Huh, well I'll be. Glad to hear it's possible. Guess I shouldn't believe everything I read, even official factory documentation. Maybe that training guide was pre-production and this feature was revised? Heck if I know...

The fault I had was no comuation with engine ECU and it's was running very rough not knowing too save block code I tryed too reprogram it and ended up with no start and lost chassis number . Got hold of a second hand one and and was able too reset imobleiser and it's started but running same and still no comuation but now can not get correct chassis number even when follow how too do it

the ids software has the raw program for your PCM to match your chassis/vin with in .
you really need to identify the communications fault . wether it be SCP or CAN network failure and fix this first .
being an 03 car it could be ether side of the facelift model . and this will determine if it has CAN BUS or not .
often a failed module in the circuit can point to the next module in the chain as the culprit . there are module pin out diagrams in JTIS within IDS/SDD
to test the wires . you can ether check the wires for continuity with all modules disconnected . or back probe the wires whilst powered (all modules connected)
with an oscilloscope to monitor module wave length activity for failure . and you can also test the voltages CANH AND CANL (high and low) at various modules and OBD2port to check for any issues with the transceivers, if CAN is applicable here ?

Had a feeling that may be the problem thanks for help will try get my head around wireing diagram . Good job it's my own car so no pressure. using it as a learning experience

Hi, kindly expound. I have bought like three replacement modules off ebay, but each I have bought upon installation onto the car does not communicate, SDD sees it as an 'X', hence I cannot get to program it onto the car. Tried ractification procedure begining with the TCM which SDD sees as a '?', with failed to communicate, and (Four fault codes logged message) then gone onto the the PCM, failed to get them to be seen by SDD.

Upon turning on the ignition, the immo lights stays solid for close to 5 minutes, then starts to blink .At my wits end.

dharry078 07-12-2019 02:33 PM

Did you resolve this?

roysrovers 07-12-2019 03:51 PM

Gave up

Gave up sorry guys too high tec for me rather have bad rust but hat off too you guys that can fix problems like this let's face it car makers rather sale you a new car
