Question Coolant loss

Newby here my mechanical knowledge finished when fuel injection became commonplace.
My car is 2005 S Type 2.7 diesel ,120k 7.My problem the car runs like a dream on motorways even towing but when in traffic and under strain ie long hills temp needle sometimes rises past midway and she starts to leak coolant at rear of engine passenger side.Tried her other day as been stood for 2 weeks ,bit of blue smoke which soon cleared(she had been ticking over for a while as i asked someone to keep starting her but just left it ticking over) temp gauge slightly above midway after 5 /6 miles.Parked up and coolant leaking from back of engine seems to be coming down bell housing can anyone help please really want to get this csr back to best

Welcome to the forum Milkaman,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to S-Type forum. This is the place to post questions about your model.

I see you never posted an Intro when you originally signed up two years ago. Please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some information about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

Welcome to the forum.

Be aware the dashboard temperature gauge is deliberately misleading, as detailed at the following link, so don't rely on it. This is from the XK forum, but the general principle is the same on the S-Type:

For the leak, I'd recommend doing a pressure test of the cooling system. It takes a special tester that connects in place of the cap. The tester has a hand pump that lets you pressurize the system to look for leaks without running the engine.

I'd pay close attention to the coolant reservoir. Not sure if the Diesel version is different, but they are notorious for cracking and leakage. Since the reservoir is pressurized and I think in the vicinity, if you're lucky maybe it's the source of the leak.

Not to be too obvious, but find and fix the leak.

i'm not at all familiar with the diesel model . but as said above it needs a pressure tester to go forward .
my guess would be a coolant hose for the turbo or heater .
or a frost plug , and it wouldn't surprise me if there was a frost plug inside the bell housing .
