If you go to the stickies at the start of this part of forum. You will be able to download a copy of the JTIS (Jaguar Technical Information Sheets) this is the official Jaguar workshop manual. This will tell you how to test it in the correct method.

Be careful handling that part they break easy for $80 bucks. Made out of brass I believe, had white liquid all over my gloves while screwing it in.

Do you have a scanner? I'd suggest watching the temperature sensor output value and seeing if it looks reasonable. If so, then the dash gauge is probably dead. There's only one temp sensor and it directly feeds the computer, which in turn drives the gauge. If the scanner shows a reasonable temperature value, you can assume the sensor and related wiring is good.

If you don't have a scanner, it's time to invest in one. Not a simple code reader, but a scanner that can display sensor values in addition to fault codes. I've got a little Bluetooth transmitter module that plugs into the OBD II port. A free app on my smartphone wirelessly receives the data and displays it on the screen. Slicker than snot, and quite affordable, too.

A elm327 which are very easy to buy on the internet but make sure that you buy a version The version 2 does not seem to work on all the Jags. There are originals and clones on the market and you can get a WiFi, Bluetooth and usb verrsions.

With of these you will be able to read the codes that you will normally need and get live read outs of a lot of things that the engine is doing.
