Default Dead Battery? How to Open Trunk.

This is for the benefit of new S-Type owners like me.
I didn't know you could open the trunk with your key.

It amazed me the amount of people who didn't know you could open the boot with the key.

Have they not read the manual, or looked at the boot.

It's not exactly an easy to see keyhole, unless you squat way down and look up. I never noticed it until I had to pull the latch open with a hangar from inside the car then once the trunk popped open up to my eye level I saw it.

Maybe this is a good time to remind all owners to go try their keys in the boot/trunk release to make sure it works.

Also, in a REAL emergency (... =:-0 ) there are extra battery "terminals" under the fender liner on the passenger side of the car. If the battery is dead and for some reason the trunk cannot be opened, the fender liner can be removed (a real pain, but still) and the electrical "posts" will be found.

Was surprised to learn that, don't know if it is described anywhere, didn't notice it in the owner's manuals.

Here is the AUX battery post. This is on a Lincoln LS but it's the same.

Right that's it, and I'd forgotten that it was only the + terminal.

PIA to get the liner out, though...

Thank you pab and tbird! Due to the cold weather here, I have been driving my beater car and have not touched the Jag for almost two weeks. Went to start it this morning and the car would not start. Of course my key wouldn't open the trunk either. I will try a coat hanger to get the emergency release first, but if that doesn't work, nice to know I can still jump it.

Why is that? It's fully mechanical if you follow the instructions given in the video at the beginning of this chain.

One note, though, the trunk lock does not work with the valet key it has to be a regular key.

Watch out for the valet button in the glove box too. That has bit people before.

Tbird: I am fairly certain the valet mode is not engaged, and I am using a regular key not the valet key, but I will double check nonetheless.

Pab: I think this may have more to do with the rear end collision repair I had in May last year then anything. The bodyshop used a different S-Type's trunk lid and may not have installed the hardware correctly. I had a problem shortly thereafter where I couldn't open the trunk because a screw was loose and fell into the mechanism. If this is a follow-up of that, I will not be too happy.

It sounds like the garage has not changed the lock on the trunk.

That's my thinking, they may not have realized that there was even a key-type lock there.

Took the car to the body shop the other day for them to look at the trunk. They did replace the cylinder with the correct keyed mechanism. The problem, was that the tech forgot to attach a cable to the keyed mechanism, so the cylinder would turn freely but not engage anything. They ordered a new cabling system and will let me know when it arrives to correct. Even though my battery now works fine, the trunk is still hit or miss on working due to the incorrect cabling arrangement: the child safety release causes the electronic release to not work from time to time. Luckily I've become quite adept at opening the trunk through the ski hatch. I don't know why it is now coming to light nearly 10 months later, but that is life. Moral of the story is to check all mechanical work completed on car, no matter how insignificant, and to replace the battery sooner rather than later as has been espoused so many times on these pages.

I've tried the key that came with car and it will not open the trunk. I did confirm that the valet button was disabled. From the attached pic of my key does it look to be a valet key?
