dim stop tail lights on one side only

the brake lamps and tail lamps are dim on one side after changing a bulb I thought had blown, I had previously had the bulb frame out due to other work I was doing on that side of the car

It could be the ground.

Perhaps not as I think that the lamps use switched ground and a constant 12v live.

It sounds basic, but make sure you have the correct bulb!
Take the bulb out the other side that is working as it should and make sure it is the same in regard to the pins on the side of the cap as the one you have just fitted. Even swap them over just to make sure it is not the bulb.

as above - did you get the correct bulb ,
as the jag 21x4w are staggered pins and are different to normal 21x5w and creates issues if you get it wrong .
also the incorrect LED's will cause this .

but also check one of your fuses in the boot/trunk fuse box is not blown also.
