Default Ex Japanese S Type differential

My 2006? 3L S Type goes really well and I am really pleased with it. It really is a good motorcar. However the Diff has a noise which can be barely heard from inside but is painfully obvious to pedestrians. As the air con has been fixed there is no other fault (touch wood) and as I am 70, I hope it lasts me until I die. But what can be done about the Diff. Is there a reasonably priced alternative available? Im in NZ so freight could be a problem but I'd rather pay and have it fixed than drive around in a faulty car. I love my Jaguar.

Prior to replacing parts driven by guesswork, take the vehicle to a Jaguar specialist and have the noise properly diagnosed. Sometimes a noise that sounds like a differential or wheel bearing is caused by a faulty tyre or something as simple.

Replacing the differential requires quite a bit of work, so a proper diagnosis is important.

Default S type Diff

Thanks NBCat. You are right, of course. Unfortunately I have champagne tastes on a beer budget. I've always wanted a Jaguar and I'm now 70 years old and I own an "S" that goes really well. How long is the average lifespan of the diff. I've been seeing the number 111,000 kms from some posts. Mine has done 113,000.

mine has 250odd thousand kms on it . seems fine .
half the problem with short lived diffs is the BS sealed for life service advice given .
always ignore that . and of course miss treatment as well .
realistically the diff should last the life of the car with the correct care .

you really do need to get another opinion .
if the diff was bad you would for sure hear and feel that in the car .
i suspect a brake issue .
any shop could help you . no need for Archabalds huge invoice's .

also you should probably summarize your location . Wellington NZ would be wise .
at least loose your house address . too many crack pots out there .

Thanks Datsports, Do you suggest having the diff serviced? At my age, I thought I had purchased my ultimate car for the rest of my days. I do hope you are correct. Thank you.

If you have no service history ,
on any important and (with in reason) serviceable component of any ageing car,
of any brand .
it can only help .
Hopefully you have plenty of days and years left to enjoy what you have preserved .
no car will last forever without money .
I think you should at least get a professional opinion on your noise .
as it could be a diff issue ,
but if it’s a brake issue It could be a safety hazard.. and likely cheaper to fix .
. only good things can come of investigating it further.

In any case it would be a good idea to change the diff oil, it's a really easy job and may help.
