The warranty I got for my mountaineer was $2400 4yr/48k miles bumper to bumper with $50 ded.

The warranty paid out over $700 on the first use of the warranty. The problem with all of these warranties is whether or not the problem your car is having is covered. I ran into a problem with mine, the mountaineer dealership said that if the warranty didn't cover I'd have to pony up the cash just for them to figure it out. I can't remember the exact amount of time it was going to take but I was looking at +/- $600 just to take a look at where my a/c leak was coming from in the vents. Obviously I said screw it. The other problem I had was that my car took a back seat when it came to getting things taken care of because of the warranty. If I had a ford esp warranty my car would have been in and out of the shop in a day or 2 but because it was 3rd party they could have cared less. I think it was a week or 2 by the time I got the car back.

Anyways just some things to think about.

Like I said it has already paid a good chunk of change as it stands now from the first trip to the dealership. I have some more problems with the car now so I'm sure this next visit I will exceed the original cost of the warranty since the problems are transmission related.

 

A Jaguar service manager that I have come to trust implicitly confirmed this morning that my research indicating the much-improved quality of 2005-2008 S-Types is accurate. He says that from what his dealership sees, well-maintained S-Types from 2005 up are no more risky than either my wife's Lexus or my Ram from a breakdown perspective. He agrees with me that it would be a better decision to put perhaps $1,500 away in the bank for repairs after my factory warranty expires than it would be to shell out $2,600 to $3,000 for an extended warranty. The transmission problems are solved, the coil problems are solved, the electronic glitches are mostly solved, and for those of us who maintain our own vehicles very meticulously, his opinion is that we'll probably be better off foregoing the purchase of an extended warranty. There are no guarantees of course, but I'm leaning stronger and stronger towards just putting a couple of grand in a money-market account at the local credit union and drawing from it if our S-Type needs it....

 

I'm not to shure about the trans claim. Mine has 44k showing now and is starting to display the "lurch" tendancies. I'm not that concerned about it because I have that "extended warranty" in my back pocket.....

 

Describe your "lurch" in detail, please. What does it do, when does it do it, and is it consistent every time? Can you predict when it will happen? Did it start gradually and get worse over time, or did it just show up one day and surprise you? Also, have you had your transmission firmware reflashed by your dealer? If so, did it help? If not, that may be all you need to do.

It happens when rolling to a stop. It also happens rolling in stop and go traffic. May be a reflash.. But have heard enough that the reflash just prolongs the inevitable. Also, from what I understand, a reflash is not a free service. It will be for me, but that is because of the warranty, hence my lack of concern. I'll be worried at 99k or 2011, whatever comes first. But the plan is to wave good-bye by then and move on to something else.

 

Any car can have tranny issues though. Overall I'm sure the newer s-types are quite reliable. My mountaineer has 40,*** miles on it and the tranny has had problems (small tiny probs the wife doesn't even notice) for the longest of time. I'm just saying overall the s-type is probably a really reliable vehicle.
