actually the gas mileage is extremely good.. the V6 is kinda useless . i wud go with the V8 more power and better gas mileage.. even a supercharged V8 can get 18-22 mpg.. and a v8 can get 24-27 sometimes more.. they do only take 93 octane gas.. any less can cause misfires. never heard of a $400 oil change . it s more expensive to take to a dealer.. but these cars arent cheap and arent easy to work on either.. i wudnt trust someone who gets paid peanuts .. to do brakes on my car.

I am interested as to why the dealer must do the work on the car? I do most all of my work on my corvette, my blazer, civic, and the other cars I have. What makes this so different? If you can change brake pads, rotors, spark plugs, transfluid, etc on other cars what is the difference? I can tell you that I will make every effort to do the work on my car myself. I will be changing the rotors and air intake out within the next month. Will keep you all posted as to how hard it is or if I am unable to do it myself.

Most work done thru a dealer will be expensive regardless of make. They average $90+ an hour. Oil change can be done anywhere and brakes I do myself. $400 for new rotors and pads F/R.

"3. These cars take 93 grade gas only. No exceptions"

The above statement is not entire true. You could alternate using 90 with 93. Or, fill up with 93 then alternate at half fill up with 89 or 90.

BUT!

There is no more than a $3 to $4 price difference per fill up from using 89 or 93. It's the price at the pump that gives the "sticker shock"

I did my own brakes and had an oil change done at a quality repair shop for about 35.00. I also changed my own HID bulbs when the dealer wanted 850.00 to do it.

Tailsock, check out your area and you'll find a mechanic that works on Jags. The 4.2 car is much better and more reliable than the 4.0. You can get a lemon with any Mfr. even Toyota. It just cost more for a Jag because there are not that many of them around.

Bottomline this type of car is worth buying. But a V6 model? No throaty sound and no pickup.

S-Types are good cars. 4.2 definitly.

Mileage isnt terrible and the oil changes at our dealer are $50 for straight oil change or $120.00 for full service oil change.....top off fluids etc and check over entire car.
Your "mechanics" are jealous that they are not "technicians" I guess....lol
About the only thing you have to go to dealer for is electrical stuff or warranty work. Everything else is just another car.

For me, it was between a E350, E500, 530i, 545 or S-type R. Jaw-dropping looks, neck-snapping performance, slack-tightening appeal, panty-dropping results....... ya feel me? Oh wait a sec, were you asking about the type R?

I have the 2000 S-type, 103k miles, very nice car, average around 20-24mpg around town so thats not too bad either.
I just put her into the Ford dealership (the Jag dealership is 50+ miles away) for oil change and filter, fuel filter, air filter, new spark plugs and wheel rotation, the bill came to $517.33.
The labor cost came to $364, aparantly to get to the plugs you have to take off the inlet manifold, hence the large labor cost, but she's worth it!!
Huge difference it throttle response and seems a lot smoother thru the gears.

It's really sad, you are one angry human being. Instead of being pissed off at yourself you pick on a car. Just

Your not going to get too much sympathy here I don't think.
Maybe you should go out and drown your sorrows instead of whining on every thread on the board.
