First Timer questions about 2000 S Type w/V8

My mom has a 2000 S type with the V8 and has had nothing but problems with it since she bought it. She has been through a transmission, all kinds of ignition coils, electrical issues, etc - and thats just after the warranty ran out. I am trying to help her out and locate a reliable southern california independent dealer who may be cheaper than taking it to the dealer every time. Does anyone have any reccomendations? Is there a local forums section I can post in?
In reading other peoples posts on here I have noticed that this car seems to be a disaster reliability wise. My moms car definitely follows this pattern. My mom has reached a breaking point with the money this car has cost her. However, she still owes more than its worth as she bought it used about two years ago so it doesnt look like she will be selling it. I would really like to see her in that new Jag sedan but it doesnt look like its going to happen right now.
Thanks for the help.

This car is very reliable if you service it. That means take it to the dealer before it breaks.
Transmission? Sometimes luck of the draw most times, drive it right ans change the fluid once in a while. Feed it nicely. It's not a mustang with a T5. Or (b) make sure they are not screwing with you. Sometimes a new tranny is not the answer but it's the most profitable answer.
Coils? Stop washing the motor. Or (b) make sure they are not screwing with you. Did you SEE the code?
Get a code reader. Take it tot hem saying "This is wrong" and ask to see the book time on it. Tell them you'll pay actual time and not book time and they can skip the courtesy car wash. TYVM.
It's an expensive car. It needs maintenance just like every other car. Understand that the guy next to me at work has a Camry and it's always in the shop. He gets these postcards about regular maintenance and he takes it in every time. Heck I even drop his car off with him and drive him back to work. He pays $400-500 sometimes, sometimes just the oil change. They fix lots of stuff on his car and he packages it as "they are taking care of me". The girl on the other side of me has an Audi. She takes it to the dealer LESS that Camry guy. She LOST IT when she had to pay $1000 for a new rad on her 4 year old car. Yes, it got hit underneath by something solid but she still blamed Audi for it. Says her car is unreliable.
It's what you make of it, maybe she should be driving a Toyota and getting "maintained".
PS - I just spent $3000 servicing my 2000 S V8 motor. Not broken, just upgrading the tensioners and replaing a single chain. It is maintenance. Not breaking down.
