Default Genuine vs After Market A/C Compressor

Guys,

Time to replace the A/C Compressor on my 2003 V6, significant oil leakage!!... Has anyone had any troubles with the after market ones? Jaguar here in Oz has quoted $2002 for the genuine article without clutch assembly, where as EBay has aftermarket ones for 10% of that price!!! And the come with a new clutch!!

Not checked on a locally re-manufactured one yet nor looked into repairing mine. Has anyone endeavoured to take one a part and replace the seals?

Thanks in anticipation.

Cheers,

Doug

I have used reman compressors for 20+ years and only ever had one that the clutch wouldn't engage. Exchanged it.

I use a reman out of California. Nothing wrong with reman.

Yes.

Long time member JoyesJag and he fully documented the journey.

i ve recently had the same problem on my 2001 3L V6 (huge oil leak on my ac comp)
i bought an after market comp on rockauto (roughly 250 euros, 300 dollars , new, not reman. Jaguar price was 1200 euros !!!) a few weeks ago and everything is OK (i use my AC everyday) !

be careful, in my case the comp was NOT filled with specific AC oil, so i recommend you to spend time reading the instructions in order to know if you ll have to buy specific oil or not.

p.s. on 2001 V6 i had to buy "46" PAG AC oil, but the viscosity can be different for an other year. I have some interesting documents about AC oil, feel free asking me if you are in trouble.

I tried to take my old compressor apart. The problem I had is that I could not remove the clutch assembly, not even with a variety of different types of pullers. Basically I shredded the aluminum compressor housing and cracked the clutch assembly beyond repair. I believe there is a thread floating around in the X Type section with the experience that I had. Someone else asked basically the same question as you about the seals.

Here is the link for the X Type thread:

Here is a link to the DIY AC compressor R&R that I did some time ago:
