RE: How much would you pay?
lol @ big rims.
The early S-Types had crap Ford transmissions in them 5R55N. They all go bad. If you have 60k + it doesn't matter if car was taken care of or not. The transmission will take a dump. Good news is however, you can get it rebuilt at most tranmission shops as it is a Ford box.
If you can spring for it, as BMW745 stated above, 2003 or newer would definitly be a much nicer car. Redesigned interior and suspension and engines and transmissions. Really only body looks the same.

I have a 2000 S-Type she has done 100k miles and still going strong, I have no problems at all, the only thing I'm still trying to sort out is the compass in the rear view mirror won't say south, it goes from N,NE,E NE back to North etc. I have tried to reset it with no luck but apart from that no probs.
Depending on bodywork etc I would suggest $6K-$8K and you wouldn't be far off the mark, you could always put the car info into the Kelley Blue Book website http://www.kbb.com/KBB/Default.aspxand see what it comes up with.

The dealer is asking 8995... so I just wanted to make sure that it was a good deal.
