Motor stopping every 5 - 10 miles

I have a 2002 S-Type 3.0 with 67,000 miles. Recently I drove the
car about 35-40 miles and it just sort of puttered out and stopped.
I pulled over to the side of the road and turned the ignition off
and tried to restart it. It fired right up. It went for another 5
miles and did the same thing. It continued to act this way every 5-
10 miles. I took it to a local Jag repair facility and they said it
was the variable valve timing causing problems. They referred me to
a former Jag representative who works on them. He wants $4000 to
repair it. (Jag Dealer is 90 miles away.) Said it had to do with
the oil pump needing replacement, tensioners adjustment, etc... It
appears to me it lends more to the electrical/electronic rather
than mechanical, but I know very little about these cars. Car
drives fine in the short haul. (Been afraid to go on any distant
trips since this happened). Has anyone else experienced this
problem? If so, what was your remedy? Thanks LDJ

Sorry to hear about ure problem. The dealer will rip you off on the labor and parts, if you can find a local shop that knows what they are doing, it will be a lot cheaper.
I will dissagree with you 04XTYPE.
The dealer is your best bet to get your Jaguar fixed correctly. Jaguar has a half dozen models so the techs learn the cars better and see the same problems more often.
You wont get that at an independent shop.
Independent shops will not have Jaguar's diagnostic software.
Jaguar parts are not cheaps, I will give you that. The independent shop has to buy the parts from a Jaguar dealer, the price to you will be the same as the dealer or more.
I wouldnt trust an independent shop with anything more than maintanace work.
No dealer is perfect, you will have techs that will try and rip you off. That happens in and dealer, from Kia to BMW.
You have to be smart when you got to a dealer. Ask to see the actual labor cost from Jaguar, not what the service advisor or tech tell you.
