Really? wow. I had been watching for a Str for a few months. This one came up in Naples and checked it out. One of the selling points was the wheels and the brakes had just been done. Plus its low miles, 62500. I had Mitch ( Jag Repairs in Pompano) check the car out and other than the usual interior cheap plastic cracking its in pretty good shape. Yeah we should meet up for sure. How about over the weekend at the mall on the corner of Copans and US 1? Its a big parking lot and there is J Marks restaurant.

It's how they do it over here, too (during the annual "MoT" - our entire car safety/etc check).

A probe is put in the tailpipe and a rather expensive computerised system monitors CO, HC, lambda and so on under a small number of conditions (the tester lets it idle, revs it, etc).

There's a fast (basic) emissions test which is all that's done if it passes and a rather long test if it fails the basic one.

The limits for CO, HC, etc depend on the year of manufacture (well, it's a bit more complex but hey) of the car.

There's a charge for this lot

(These are for petrol - gas - cars.)

That's how it was done here in Ontario until the beginning of this year. Now they simply query the OBDII port. If there's ANY codes it's an automatic fail irrespective of what's actually coming out of the tailpipe or whether the code is related to emissions or not.

The amount of fuel being wasted and pollution created by people driving around the countryside trying to induce a P1111 code far exceeds whatever could be saved by finding true polluting car.

As the article says, the number cars failing has just about doubled since this brilliant scheme kicked in.

Ours nowadays also checks the MIL self-tests but they don't (yet) do any actual OBD stuff.

Doing tailpipe emissions testing isn't really a good thing because many vehicles pollute at other revs than the test. Plus, the tests on diesels needed to be far tougher years ago - but they are what they are (and thus we have serious air quality problems and vast numbers with COPD etc). It's all a vexed mess really.

There again, driving around trying to set monitors (which isn't - currently - needed here) is less than ideal.

It's been very disappointing to see how poor garages are here at actually diagnosing emissions-related problems. THAT is where our authorities need to put serious education because motorists are being fleeced for dire work - the "it might be this so swap it" mechanics sure create huge bills all too often.

Er, might be a bit off topic....

Congrats on the purchase!
If im not mistaken SkipM is setting something up for this Saturday in Boca Raton. There are a few members a bit north of us, West Palm Beach area so Boca seems to be sort of in the middle, good for everyone. I sent him a message, if he confirms we can meet up there, if it falls through we could meet up at that mall, im familiar with it, big open parking lot and some good food nearby. Lets see if the Boca meet up is a go, might be 4-6 members showing up if it does.

Yep, I saw where Skip mentioned a meet up off Yamato. It went silent the last few days so I assume its not happening, if it does count me in. I am a happy guy! Alpine cut and programmed a key for me and while I was there they went over the car. It all checked out pretty well.

Yep, just a 4 gas analyzer (CO, CO2, NOX and HC) and test your gas cap seal once every 2 years. Pretty worthless really, and the state loses money doing the program. They have roadside sniffers set up too that you can drive by and if it reads your car twice in one year and it passes, you can avoid going to the emissions testing centers all together (kinda negates the gas-cap thing). Another drawback is that only the state-controlled testing centers can do the test unless you have a diesel; so you typically spend a few hours in line waiting for your 10 minute test so you can spend a few more hours at the DMV renewing your registration. We also can't be failed for a CEL, but can fail a visual inspection for excessive smoke or no catalytic converters. In addition, we have no "safety" inspection, so your car's engine can be within the limit of exhaust emissions, yet have ball joints ready to break apart and cords popping out of your tires and you can drive it around as you please.

I run 255-30-ZR20 and the front and 295-25-ZR20 on the rear, never had a problem with scarping the wheel wells

To me, looks like wheels with an attached car. The opposite of my desire...
