New 99 stype owner with a million questions!!
Hi, Ive recently bought a 99 stype and have a few questions. If anyone can answer any that would be great.
I bought the car for £3200 and thought that was a good deal, very comfortable and a lovely drive apart from a few things.
The gear change is very jumpy. The display came up with "gearbox fault" at one point but that has since gone. It seems fine in the higher gears but jumps in the lower ones.
Also when the car is ticking over it shudders alot and at times konks out completely!!
The other problem ive got is when driving over any kind of bumps or lumps in the road is makes a knocking sound.
Im getting it serviced this week and have been quoted 300 quid but what do you think the chances are that they'll fix any of these faults??

Chances of all of your problems being fixed for a mere 300 bucks- It's not Disneyworld. We all agree that the trannys would be fine if they weren't sealed for life. Try to get a tranny fluid change ASAP but that might run you a bit more since I'm sure it's a mission to change the fluid. The knocking on the wheels is a common problem. That's the ball joints needing to be changed. Can you elaborate a little bit more on the knock-out you wrote about?

The S Type model was introduced in October 1998 here in the UK (Glass's guide).
Gearbox - if the battery is low or on it's way out you can get gearbox fault indications. Borrow a known good battery of a suitable spec and of recent vintage and see how it goes with that. The battery will last about 4 years in these cars before you start having problems.
Knocks - could be the anti roll bar and or bushes. Ball joints if badly worn will also knock.
Edit - I had the ATF and filterreplaced for £99 by a reputable transmission rebuilder. Shop around and take some advice.

Thanks for the advice it gives me a bit more to go. I know absolutely nothing about car engines so garages see me coming!!
The cars got 122000 miles on the clock. Whats a ringer?? Its got the log book and other paperwork. 2 owners but no service history at all.
So what exactly do they do for the 300 quid for the service?? is it really worth it?
Im not against spending money on it, as i said its a lovely car to drive. I just dont want to be ripped off.
