Default New S-Type owner, Some gremlins here

Greetings listers,

Bought my wife her dream car, 2004 S type, 4.2L. Something strange going on with door locks. no matter what method I use to lock the doors, ie key fob, auto lock a when I drive away, manually locking the door, or central lock button, the doors lock, then immediately unlock. I currently can lock the vehicle at all. I suspect that one of the sensors is detecting that a door or truck is not closed, but I don't know quite where to start.

So I seek the collective wisdom of the list....Any ideas?

This is usually due to a failed door lock actuator in one of the doors. Forum member Rick (joycesjag) put together a very detailed how-to procedure covering this particular issue a few years ago. Search this forum using "failed door lock actuator" as your search phrase and you should be able to find it rather quickly....

How long was the car standing before you bought it for your wife? The first thing to do with this car before you start going any deeper is to check the battery with a voltmeter it has to be 12.6 v when fully charged. Anything below 12.4 v means that there is not enough power to operate everything correctly.

So if the voltage is low charge the battery overnight and then check the voltage after turning the lights on for 3 mins.

Might wanna pull all the interior door panels off until you figure out which lock actuator is being hissy, lest you end up like Grant, with one locked that won't unlock.....https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...1/#post1656510

Sitting in vehicle push the automatic door lock button of choice while watching the chrome manual lock latch. The chrome lock latch that does NOT lock completely or barely moves is your culprit. I would start with the left rear (most common failure) then front right. I have replaced both.

I would also spending more money on a new lock actuator, I purchased a used one and it failed a couple months later.

You win the prize! Watched as I tried the locks, pass side front door lock did not move. Tried manually locking with that button, locks tried to lock and unlock continuously. So, I'll order a replacement, but in the mean time, can I unplug that actuator and lock the rest of the vehicle with the button?

This is a great thread in each and every respect . . .
  • great, well structured, full yet concise description by OP of issue;
  • sure, problem is well known but immediate pointing to solution;
  • timely reminder of how to quickly ID the offending culprit;
  • immediate feedback from OP and action to avoid lockout . . .
Just needs some appropriate "Thanks" to make this whole thread a picture-perfect example of how to seek and give timely and accurate technical advice.

What do others think? Sticky? Hall of Fame? A special presentation of Golden Underpants for "Rick the Rencher?"

Cheers,

Ken

DO NOT LOCK the passenger front door. The doors will not unlock if you do this. All the doors will say locked. I can tell you this from experience. The only way I was able to unlock the doors was to use my key.

It is a simple fix. I replaced it with a used switch twice. A new one would be best. I had a warranty with the first used switch, so I was able to swap out for another one (used). If/when another one goes out, I'll get a new one especially if it is on the rear door.

If memory serves correctly, in Rick's case those would be more properly called "mowing pants"......

Thanks to all who helped. I am a long time British car owner (1959 TR3, 1972 Triumph Spitfire) and I am glad to find the same helpful community here in Jaguar world.
