Default Newb looking to buy

Hello all! I went to look at a 2005 s type today with 98000 miles. Started right up and drove like a real dream. It is the 4.6 v8. Seemed like a pretty clean car. 5 minutes into the test drive the yellow engine light popped up. Everything seemed to drive just perfect still which leaves me to believe it has something to do with emissions or misfires. Car is beautiful blue! This would be my first jag so I'm looking for any advice towards it or not. I own a odb2 scanner so I will be checking what that code/s are. Owner says it goes on and off but only very recently. They said they blew a hose and had it professionally fixed. It was a hose the mechanic had to take the intake off to get to apparently. After the test drive it did smell a bit like syrup so I was thinking a coolant leak but couldn't find anything by quick observation. Engine bay looked to be all there but there were quite a bit of white spots, rubbed right off. Kind of like water spots but clearly a more defined white color and not confined to one area. Overall was a dream to drive but I feel the $8000 asking is a bit steep. All advice is very much appreciated.

Just understand that the S Types can't be given away so be very harsh when making an offer. Walk away if it has problems and yours already does.

Thank about it. If it was easy and cheap to fix why did the current owner not get it fixed?

Then you must do the repairs yourself or you will go broke using the dealer. I posted this several times but a used luxury car gets no cheaper to repair the older it gets.

Jaguars are a bit rare so you can't take them to any old shop. You are in the outlands and I am sure you have very few import/luxury repair shops in El Paso! Is there even a Jaguar dealer in your town? Some things will require a dealer so you do want one within reach.

Do some searches on EBay of the completed auctions. You will see hardly any S Type selling and the prices are very low.

I would offer $5000 tops. And that's with NO check engine light coming on.

Are they that bad to you guys? I thought I read they were pretty reliable. I do most of my own work and never shy away from learning. We do have a jaguar dealership and about 4 really good indy luxury mechanic shops. I own a bmw and have done what little work that has been required myself. I understand the why haven't they done it and people here are LAZY! Always want something perfect but super cheap!

You just need to go in eye wide open is all.

I bought an S type R with the engine light on, and I knew why so made sure it was cheap.

The car needs both cats and they are $2658 each so $5300

I only paid $6000 for the car, so the potential repaire bill is already the cost of the car.

If you can read the code and what ever it is sounds like a cheap fix, use this a barganing tool to get the price down and go for it. But if your not sure, check it all out and get prices before you comit yourself.

S type's are great cars but all the parts are very expensive. Dont be put off getting the car if you want it, just make every effort to know what needs spending first.
