Default P0171 and P0174 and oil Leak

I know there are multiple threads regarding these issues, but it seems as though every story is unique in terms of what the solution may be, so here goes:

On my 2003 STR, I saw some oil on my garage floor and I checked the oil in my car and it was empty ! I knew I had a leaking valve cover gasket, so I figured that was the culprit and I took it to an indy mechanic. He suggested that I top off with synthetic blend and bring the car to him.

Great guy, and he seemed to do good work; however, after he changed the gaskets and spark plugs, I was on my way home and I got a CEL with an intermittent restricted performance light. Wonderful...

So I take the car back to the mechanic and he finds the codes are P0171 and P0174, and we sprayed carb cleaner to look for vacuum leaks adjusted the rubber seals around the intake, checked the intake box, and - no luck. To top it off, we found that my oil leak was now seeping into my exhaust system, which it had not done. I was now getting a little oil out of my mufflers at WOT (I'm guessing my high flow magnaflow cats are now toast) and smoke from my engine bay (I marked where smoke is coming from in the attached picture) and mufflers when I crank the engine.

Anyway, the mechanic is 45 minutes away from me and with a new baby (yay!) I had to get home. The plan now is to let him do a thorough check (monitor fuel trims and the such) this upcoming Saturday.

In the meantime, I tried to address the vacuum leak codes: I cleaned and changed the o-ring in the MAF, replaced the fuel filter, and replaced the bank 2 vacuum hose from the intake. No luck yet.

Through our texting so far this week, the mechanic thinks that it could be an o-ring on the dipstick causing the oil leak and possibly the vacuum leak. But, who knows, I have read that the possibilities are quite broad: EGR valve, crankcase, brake booster vacuum line, etc.

I'll keep everyone posted when it gets a thorough check up this weekend.

Right behind the oil dip stick handle is the "purge control canister" it is pictured in the link that follows. I see you have the V8 motor but the purge control canisters are known to crack where they are sealed (upper/lower).

Sounds like when the mechanic changed plugs he must have tweaked one of the brittle vacuum lines or the canister and cracked it.

Again the picture in the link is of a V6 motor but the "purge control canister" is in the same local. If you want to read more up on it, do an advanced search "purge control canister" in the S Type subdirectory.

Your Brake Reservoir Cap Seems To Be Leaking, I'd Have A Look At That If I Was You.

Don't forget the PCV black disc too. It has caused problems and the hoses have had leaks before.

The brake booster vacuum line is another good one to check. I would block it off to do a 100% check.

I just noticed you have the tube that runs from the cam cover to the intake hose blocked off. Maybe put things back to stock for troubleshooting purposes?

Another thought as well. Did the mechanic have the air filter cover removed? It is difficult to put back on correctly even for someone that knows these air box lids. It may look like its correct but in reality it is separated causing the codes you provided.

Thanks! I will have the mechanic take a look at these!

I'm not quite sure which tube you are talking about.

We removed the air filter cover and reattached several times, no luck there. Won't hurt to try again!

I'm Thinking This Tube Is Functional, It's Just Routed Under The Engine Cover?

I wasnt sure if that that was the tube of reference. If so, then yes, it is brand new and just routed under the engine cover.

Default update

Yay! She is all good!

Codes were due to a vacuum line, not exactly sure which one, but the mechanic said monitoring fuel trims made it obvious.

Oil leak was from the new gasket having a defect. Once replaced, all is perfect. We did find that my air box tabs were broken, so, time to buy a mina gallery intake
