Default Parking Sensors

Hi all,

I just call got a call from my auto electrician who is fitting a new RH inner parking sensor to my 2004 Jaguar S-type R. He has fitted the part but now says that an additional charge of £45 is required as the sensor needs to be programmed to the car. As far as I was aware the sensor are plug and play? Would someone be able to confirm this please?

Thanks, Thanim

Never heard that before. Maybe he means to clear the error but they normally self-clear when driving.

I'd be tempted to ask more.

A tech might comment if you're lucky...

He is out to get more money from you. They are plug and play units.

Perhaps there is something else wrong with it.

Thanks for the replies so far. I did contact the Jaguar dealer as I had never heard of the sensors requiring programming. A Jaguar technician confirmed that they did not require programming, but sometimes they do not work as they need the error code to be cleared as mentioned above. I will ask the auto electrician more specifically what sort of programming they needed to do when picking up the car later.

The price he quoted to do the job is what you should pay, he should have included any fault clearing / "programing" in the original quote and £45 seems a lot for a 5min job if codes do need clearing.

Well I ended up paying £102 so he definitely was out to make money! He charged (£45 = vat for swapping the sensor and £40 + vat for removing the error code). When I asked him whether he just removed the code, he said he did and also 'programmed' the sensor to the car. I gave him a look to say he was talking rubbish and paid the money as I didn't want to argue over £40. The search for a trustworthy mechanic in South Wales continues! Thanks to those who were able to confirm this for me

Where in South Wales are you, I live in Liverpool but spend a lot of time in swansea and port Eynon.

You should check if anyone from your area, on the UK Forum, can recommend a good indy
