S-Type R MPG
Just throwing in my 2 cents again,
You have to remember that these cars have adaptive software in them.
So if you drive 5 miles, get on the highway and do 80 for 30 miles than get off highway
and go city driving again for 3 or 4 miles, you trip computer will take the calculations from the ECM
and show you an average of let's say 25 mpg.
Now if you are on a 1500 mile road trip you average will be higher because it is all highway.
If you never get on the highway, just city, stop and go, you might see an average of 10 mpg. It is
not because you are getting 10 mpg, it is an average. Going from light to light burns far more fuel
than cruising.
constant city driving you should see 250-330 miles per tank.
highway you should get 350-420 if you are under 80mph.
Also, S-TypeR has two fuel pumps, so when you accelerate from a stop both pumps
start dumping fuel which is why you end up with crap city mpg.

Well as I've said before, I get a Max. of 220 miles per tankfull that is from full until the low fuel light comes on. Even if I figure it out the old fashion way it's still about 13.5 mpg. I do it everytime I fill up! Just a note, My in town driving is not really that much stop and go. It's usually pretty long distance between lights it just at low speeds.
Around 25-35 mph.

I checked mine yesterday while fillin. Its around 300 miles per tank (City) for last 2 fillups!
Yeah it does go up and down but not below 280-290 or higher then 310-320 in City.

The funny thing is that when I check the range after a fill up it says 376 mi. but that goes down pretty quick.
Mine is even worse in winter. Now I'm getting about 195 mi. per tank full!

Yeah I hear ya there mojo! Although I'm not a str but my x gets really bad mileage in the winter! Couldn't be the starting her and letting her warm up!
BTW mojo I just added you as a friend on cardomain...now at least you've got a friend on there!

I just got a 2005 S-Type 3.0 and it seems to get about 15-17 mostly in town driving. It is rather cold here in the DC area and I attribute this to the cold weather. A cold dense air probably causes the engine management system to add more fuel to maintain the proper air/fuel mixture, just a guess though. I'm sure some of the techs here could provide a more detailed reason. I also need a larger sample size to make a better estimate. Somewhat interesting is that the computer starts with a range say 300 miles as an example. It then goes down in range in a linear fashion regardless of driving type. This was unlike my previous two XJ6's that would increase their ranges if I was freeway driving. It seemed they would spaz out if I drove at 60 mph, however, if I drove at 80 mph, the computer was more accurate. This is not feasible due to the ever vigilance of VA's finest

My commute to work is about 30mi one way. It consists of 5% city and 95% highway driving.
With my K&N installed and the cruise set at 67mph, (limits 55 and the GSP don't play) I get 21.7avg mpg.
On flat parts I get up to 28mpg and on hills it dips down to 15-16mpg.
I have a S-Type R.
Now, I'm sure the computer is slightly inaccurate but figure this... I fill up every friday when I have under 1/8th of a tank. That means I drive Saturday & Sunday (from 20-80 miles) then drive 60+ miles every day for four days.
The week days alone is over 300 miles per tank.
Just my 2cents. I'll post pics up tonight.

Same as WhiteSTR here... about 13.5 in town with a heavy foot. I've seen 29MPG on extended highway trips.
Show me another daily driver with a Supercharged V8 that produces 390 bhp that can get better than that.... I probably would buy it...if it existed!

Wow. Some of you seem to have really thirsty STR's!! Mine isn't nearly as bad. I have a 03 STR and right now I'm getting about 300mi on a tank and that's in the winter. In the summer, my best was 735km (460mi) on a full tank. This was on a long trip though. I seem to average about 550-600 km (340-375mi) per tank in the summer with about 50/50 highway/city. My best average fuel economy according to the computer was about 32mpg, and when I calculated it, it came to about 33mpg. Not to bad for the type of car if you ask me!
Cant argue with that mike.. I feel like I do my part to support my local government as well as the tire retailers..
I have had the chance to try out different width tires: 275s 285s and 305s with some interesting results..
