Suggestions for used S-type purchases?
Hi everyone,
I have a 1966 S-type that I'll be posting about in the appropriate forum, however I had some questions about the 'modern' version. I've always loved the styling of them, probably because of the heritage with the original, it just seems tasteful and understated, like Jaguars so often are.
If I were to look at the (US) used market for them, are there some tips to know about? For example, is a 3.0 liter engine ok, or 4.0 the only way to go? Are there known notorious mechanical or other issues with certain model years to watch out for, that would make purchase a no-go?
I would probably be interested in a cruiser only and don't really desire a supercharged model, unless the price differences are fairly minor at this stage. I'm used to tinkering with my daily driver (Dodge Neon) and wonder how difficult it is to self-repair items like shocks and fuel pumps on an S-type compared with a Ford or GM or Chrysler, do you need a boatload of specialized tools to do anything for instance.
How is the aftermarket and parts replacement for these vehicles, is it difficult to get what you need at a reasonable price in most instances? Understanding of course, that 'reasonable' for a Jaguar is different from, say, a 2002 Toyota Corolla. Just taking soundings right now, interested in your input and suggestions on resources where I can look further-- thanks.

get a 2003 and up, 3.0 V6 and 4.2 V8 are both good options. aftermarket is pretty good but use common sense when ordering aftermarket or original. 2 aftermarket upper control arms are $70, OE is $250 a piece for example.
pretty easy car to repair, no better no worse than a modern rwd domestic.

Well it's your decision (I had a 2005 STR and it was a great car!) but I would stay away from the 4.0L for sure. I also would get the latest year S-Type too.
The 4.2L and 6 speed ZF are pretty bullet proof so I would recommend a 2007-2008 model. They were the lowest production numbers as the S-Type was almost dead at that point.
But they are out there. You can go with the V-6 too but it is a Jag!
You are 100% correct that DIY is the ONLY way to go! This forum has all the problems figured out long ago.
Also some strong members helping out and even a couple of factory Jaguar techs. Brutal was one and posted a great deal in the earlier days.

Get latest 4.2 if possible. Parts easy to get. My 4 has the older mazda gearbox... cheap and easy but occasionally clunky. Suspension straigforward to replace with good ball joint / bush remover.. I mean the ball joint not just the taper. Parts come from everywhere.. Taiwan has best front upper suspension wishbones.
Mine going well for 6 years of ownership but if the engine goes so will it.
AirCon / climate: Always dodgy. Mine worked today for the first time in three years. Dash out to find problem and winters here are warm. Ac easy to fix.
Just lost rear mudflats in flood waters... so one more fix.
