I have a 2004 S-Type 3.0 w/ 34K miles. Noticed that it has developed what I will call a surge. At a steady speed, (for example 40 mph) it 'feels like' the brakes are applied lightly on and off every 2 or 3 seconds. It is not noticable during accelleration. Anybody know what this could be? I still have 3 weeks left on my warrenty thankfully, and will be taking it in on Monday. But I wonder if this is a common known issue or an oddball. I did a search on the forum and saw some similiar issues but no resolutions.

 

Rear parking brake cables dragging. Load up the rear of car, trunk, rear seat with some heavy friends or whatever you can find and see if it is more noticable. Common problem especially if car runs fine.

 

Ok, sounds about right. I had a problem with the automatic PB a little while ago. Glad to hear its common. Thanks.

 

03-04 had the problem. They came out with a slightly longer cable and "cheese wedges" for the cable to sit on. Works wonders. I am not saying that is your problem of course, but if car runs great....thats where I would look first.

 

You said the PB cables may be "dragging". Would you also say (in other words) this means the cablesare adjusted too tight? I will put it up tomorrow and look for an adjustment if so. It would be much more convienent than taking it to the Dealer. Thanks for the help.

 

There is no adjustment. The pb motor has the cables attached to it and the other ends go to the calipers.

 

Ok, thanks for saving me the trouble of looking. Do you have any idea what the Dealer will do in this situation? Put the longer cables and cheese wedges in?

Ok, took the car to the dealer on Monday. Went to pick it up today. They said they replaced the coil pack and plug on cyl 3. I'm thinking 'thats not going to fix the vibration in the rear' (I failed to mention the simultainious vibration [waaam waaam sound] with the surgein the previous posts). So I took the car for a 5 mile drive and it did it again, twice. Took it back to the service dept and told the service writer its still not fixed. Proceeded to tell them what you (factoryjaguartech) said about the park brake and they (the manager is now with us) totally blew me off, like there's no way that could causethe problem. So, can you tell me if there is a Service Bulletin or a Shop Call or any type of official notice from Jag to the Techs or Serv Dept concerning the pb cable issue on the '03, '04 S-types? Something that I can show them or have them check specifically. Thanks for your help, again.

 

You have to be careful when making suggestions to shops about what we say on the boards. Maybe it's an ego thing. I like to think of it as human nature. No one wants some coming in a saying "I read on the internet...." I know people tell me that and I start shutting down. I'm sure the techs on here are then same. I think you could hurt yourself by going in with TSB's or write ups from somewhere else.

I suggest you ask the service writer to ride along with you until the problem duplicates. While your driving around start asking your questions. Could the e-brake cause this? Etc. JFT and Genius may have better insight on how to handle. I gives the service guys ideas and save face.

 

I will look for a bulletin, but as Ken said, please do not bring up the techs here when you are at the dealer. If I find the bulletin, tell them you have a friend who got there car fixed and this was the problem. Can you please look into it for me.

 

Abolutely, I won't mention you guys or the internet forum. I never really thought of it in this way, but you are right and I apprieciate the info. I'm going out of town for awhile and left the car with the dealer so hopefully they will be able to duplicate the problem since I told them there was no rush, only that the factory warrenty was expiring next month and I wanted it fixed before then.

 

I got the car back from the Dealer today and it seems to be fixed. Here is what they found.

The fault was with the transmission. They reflashed the TCM, ECM and reset trans shift adaptions, and performed trans relearn drive cycle. The fault was reported to be improved but still present. They called Jaguar Tech Hotline and were instructed to do a 'coded' reflash provided by the Jag engineers. The fault was no longer present after this new reflash.

I drove the car for about 40 miles and it was very smooth.
