Time to move on or fix?
I haven't been driving my car that much as I typically drive my girlfriend's Toyota Camry Hybrid back and forth from my house to her condo downtown.
Anyway, here are my issues on my 2002 S-Type 4.0.
Transmission starting to slip. Need to replace the tranny. $2.5K to 4K.
Headliner just came loose from the heat. :est. $400-700
Battery drain all of the time.. fix was a quick disconnect lever on the battery. Could not locate issue..
But could be from:
1) rapidly blinking fog lights.
2) Alarm issue as I don't get a honk when I lock the doors anymore.
3) Radio comes on automatically when I reconnect the battery.
4) One lamp over the license plate doesn't work, tried replacing the bulb but that doesn't work.
5) Right side power mirror doesn't adjust anymore.
Engine smokes every once in awhile. Had my mechanic replace the valve cover gasket about 5 times under warranty, and finally replaced the valve covers as he said they must have gotten warped, but it now again seems to smoke every once in awhile.
Last but not least.. paint is starting to wear. Been hit on the bumper in the rear too many times. Clear coat on hood has been dissolved because of maple tree sap, I think.
Yes, it's a sad story. My kids love the car, I love the classic look and the engine is still awesome. Runs like a charm on the highways. But it's dated. I would love the convenience of pairing my smartphone like on the newer cars, though I do it through my bluetooth to the motorola handsfree speaker to the radio signal.
I'm thinking of moving on to something with less time in time in the shop and these slight issues...
What do you think?
I've had my eye on the XJ-L for a few years, though, I think it's an impractical car for the DC city parking. Not really a fan of the XF, but haven't driven the new all aluminium one.
Would love to just drop and get the F-type, though the kids still pose an issue as I still have to be their chauffeur with all of their stuff every once in awhile or have them just take my car, which of course would get them to fight over the car. ;-)

An F Type and a beater van to move the kids sounds like a plan.
