Default Timing Chain

I bought my 2000 s type thinking that it just needed a mass air flow sensor. After replacing the mass air flow sensor and that didn’t change the rough idle. So I decided to take it to a shop ran compression test everything is good as far as compression goes he said pulling the coils on the left side doesn’t change the way the motor runs like the left side is dead at a higher idle the left side will finally kick in his suggestion is timing chain. I have bought a JTIS cd from eBay my question is there any way around buying all the special tools that are suggested for this job

What tools do I need to buy If I just need to set the timing? The problem was the tensioner being broken. Replaced the tensioner, but still runs a little rough and get a code of miss fire on bank 7. Thinking its still not in time!?

Which tensioner did you replace? How did you do it without the tools? Sounds like one bank is off a tooth on the secondary chain. It probably jumped when the tensioner broke.

Replaced the secondary tensioner on the drivers side compressed the tensioner and slid it right in. Thought the same thing that it was off one tooth adjusted that it runs alot better but still has a rough idle and get the misfire on number 7 cylinder. As stated before I have purchased the Jtis I can only find the firing order still unsure which cylinder is number 7? Wanted to check to make sure the ignition coil on number 7 is not the problem. My thoughts are that it is still a little out of time so I wanted to know which tools I have to buy to put it back in time Any feed back on which tools to buy and how to do this would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

you can get the cylinder IDs for your car in the jaguar Vehicle Specification document located in the FAQ thread in the XK8/R forum...soon that document will be part of the s-type FAQ, but not yet.

just thinking about this, if its just cylinder 7 misfiring, maybe your timing is back on, and the coil and/or plug is bad. Rotate a coil to that location and see if the misfire jumps to the other cylinder. Only way to be sure.

I followed your direction H2OBoy when I look at cylinder numbering fo V-8 up to 202.5 MY (mine is a 2000) It doesn't show a cylinder 7 the diagram next to it 2002.5 to current shows it being on the passenger side back of the engine. So confused!!!

Use this...passenger's side front to rear: 1, 2, 3, 4
Driver's side front to rear: 5, 6, 7, 8

if its not the coil, it has to be the plug. check the plug well for oil or other fluid before removing it...if its got oil, consider carefully the valve cover gasket just above it, as its coming from somewhere. Get the old plug out, clean it, and reinstall...if you don't have another to drop in.

report back
