Default Tires

Hello all
time for tires. This will be my first time buying tires for my car. My budget is 1000 dollars for all 4. Right now i am down to 2 choices. The bfgoodrich g force comp 2 a/s..or the pirelli zero...any thoughts welcome and appreciated. Forgot to mention i live where summers 100 degrees plus and about 14 inches rain oct to march..central valley of california
....so mostly dry with rain spurts..no ice of any consequence

I would also recommend Michelin Pilot Sport A/S as I have them on my S-Type 4.0 Sport (17-inch). Excellent handling with quiet ride qualities.

I was just about to start a new tire thread asking for experience for the S-Type.

Living in Mid Ohio we see snow. I don't plan on driving in the snow but it'll likely need to make a trip or two to town and we may get caught out in it. But the other 95% is all other seasons / weather.

I've narrowed my top two choices to:
- Cooper evolution tour
- Michelin Premier A/S

There is a fair amount of reporting on the Michelin's. Anyone out there have experience w/the Coopers?

thanks. Good to know. No need to pay extra for a name. I can compare tire attributes of these different brands in my size.

I really liked the Continental PureContact all-season tires that I put on my former 2005 S-Type 3.0 in late 2015. Reasonably priced, very quiet, solid straight-line tracking, no hydroplaning in even the heaviest of rainstorms, and a 70,000-mile treadwear warranty from Discount Tire. Add them to your consideration list....

Full disclosure: I never drove my S-Type in snow or ice. That is what our Outback is for....

Update

first off thanks for the replies and advice. I ended up going with bfgoodrich. Now that they are on and i have driven a bit i like them even more. Biggest thing i noticed so far is less road noise. Plus i got a super deal. 810.00 all 4 out the door. Supposed to rain a bit soon so that will be another test. I will take my 200.00 savings restock the vacation fund. This last 30 days i had to do a little rob peter to pay paul with the car but all is well now and i would drive it anywhere.

I have Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires on mine. They were on when I bought the car, but I won't complain. I bought a set of these for my last car, an 06 Saturn Aura XR with the 3.6VVT V6 engine. They are a little noisy at times but perform beautifully, even in snow (I live in Chicago).

Installed a set of Cooper CS5 Ultra Touring today. Tire place used the specs posted here at JF's (to help prevent inner front tire wear)

Only 10miles so far....

I have an older set of Cooper Touring 17" on my '02 (my wife's choice when SHE owned it). Even tread wear, 20,000 miles later. These tend to give a medium to soft ride, while taking the hard turns without a squeal or loss of grip. The CS5, being of a newer design, should perform as well or better than my 4 year-old set.

When at the tire shop I was heavily flexing / bending the Michelins and the coopers. Overall they felt pretty much the same. One exception was the coopers sidewall stiffness was firmer from the bead to about 50% up the sidewall. From that 1/2 sidewall point to the tread felt the same between the two. Both were soft and flexible.
In the 10miles I've driven it (town and freeway) Other than being smoother & quieter than the original michelins I didn't notice anything worth mentioning.
I was supprised at the date code on the old tires. "0202"

wow you got 16 years out of your old tires. I always look at that date code before install. Even just sitting on the rack the rubber will dteriorate. I also check the main serial number against the work order numbers. That is what the manufacturer uses for warranty. My dad had a good friend in the tire business and he told me a lot of the secrets. I have used them a couple times and the tire guy looks at me like how the hell do you know that. Tires are like anything else....they rotate stock. Once they tried to put 3 year old tires on and i said no way. If you can...always inspect the tires before install...at least read the 4 digit date code. Sometimes they may use a letter for the month....but always from what i have seen ....numerical for the year

I bought the car last month. Still had the originals on it. Tread was maybe 20% and the front inner edge was down to threads.

We won't be driving the Jag much for another month or so. But from Nov-ish on it'll be our main family car.

i dont know if its just me but a clean car with new tires seems to run better and is faster. My dad drilled into my head. Take care of your vehicle and it will take care of you. I learned the bad side of that phrase when younger

My Dad was into cars his whole life. He started out in parts sales and distribution, top fuel drag driver, dealership service dept, and then he finished his working time in the insurance industry. I've been fascinated with cars ever since I was 3yrs old (not kidding). I'm a bit obsessive (understatement) about things in life and around age 14 I was telling my Dad things he didn't know about cars. He was quite amused at me talking smack.. and unbeknownst to him I was modifying his car to make things better. When he realized I was the real thing he let me do maintenance on the family cars and I was working on and cleaning neighbors cars for pay. I just can't ever get enough info about stuff I'm interested in. so after working on cars during my teens I decided to become a OEM automotive engineer. Been doing that for 26yrs now. It's funny too... I've not changed a bit. Even at the level of knowledge & experience I have now, I continually am frustrated w/the lack of thought my peers put into design and what repair tech's have to do to service these things.

Back to the topic of tires.. tonight I re-aimed the headlights on the Jag. Took it out for a couple drives to make sure it wasn't blinding other drivers. These coopers are definitely quieter and smoother than the originals.
