Most likely the "in transit" system when the car was first delivered. Nothing to worry about.

The plug was for a battery maintainer when the car was shipped. The maintainer was removed at the dealer and returned to the factory. If you look at the battery box on the rear top is a nub pointing down. The wire plugs in there to keep it clean and not flopping around.

A Transit Relay is fitted to the battery at the factory. This allows the vehicle to be driven when necessary but isolates the battery from the vehicle during transit and storage preventing the battery becoming discharged.

The Transit Relay is disconnected and discarded by the Dealer at PDI. For this reason I don't have a photo but here's a drawing:

The battery terminal is connected and the lead you found tucked away out of site until discovered years later by approximately one in ten Jaguar owners.

Thanks guys! What a relief.

I was stymied by the plug for half a day. I had refitted the intake manifold and was about to test if all 4 oxygen sensors worked.

I think I'll plug it into back of the battery tray where it's supposed to. I removed the battery tray so no wonder I can't find where it plugs into!
