Series I Buy
Good catch! Thanks. I'm willing to pay more for a no-rust vehicle witch this is reported to be. However it was also reported to be an accident free vehicle,... Hmmm?
It's official! I'm now the owner of a 1973 Jaguar XJ6 (conversion)! It will arrive here in Indy from Arizona next week, hopefully.
This being my first jag having lusted over them for decades now, I know many puzzles leading to many questions leading to many $$$$'s will follow.
Thank you all for welcoming me to the Forum and you can expect many posts to come.

They've certainly done a good job of prettying up the Lump. I love the exhaust & bet it's got a great burble. There are plenty of Lump Aficionados here. So you'll find plenty of useful advice & camaraderie amongst those who like a big old Yankee V8 in the snout of their Coventry Cat.
I respectfully disagree with those who say a converted Xj6 will bring less at sale than a stock XK powered one. That may be true if "Traditionalists" or "Purists" are the only ones considered, but not for "Pragmatists" who just want the car to run reliably and look nice while it's doing it.
Rust other body damage will reduce saleability of Any car, but for those who don't speak XK, or don't want to fool with the Big 4 (blown head gaskets, cracked block, plastic timing chain tensioners, head bolts through the water jacket, all of which are things I learned hanging out here) or want more power, or just plain Mercan reliability, a converted Jaguar will bring more money and sell quicker.
Your experiences may differ, of course, especially in other countries.

Well, put me in the "Pragmatists" category. Although after typing that I question how much of a Pragmatist I am if I'm willing too purchase a 44 year old British luxury car.
But LNrb said it; it comes down to condition. I didn't buy this car to re-sell it. Not expecting to make money on it if I ever sell it. I bought it to enjoy driving it and I predict that if I do take care of it in ten or twenty years I will make a profit.

Maybe 73 series 2's?
My car was the 19th from last series 1 off the line stamped 9/73 on the plate. Series 2 were well and truely rolling off the line by then.

That is the question. Whether it be nobler in mind to suffer the slings & arrows of outrageous Jaguar Purists. Or to take a 350 Chev against an ocean of busted 4.2 XK motors. &, by opposing them, end them!
Buggered if I know.

o1xjr,
The later straight pipes are currently installed. I will be getting the original pipes along with the car as well as original steering wheel. I'll be interested to see how much difference they make in sound. I like the racier (louder) sound, but I'm pretty sure my wife would like the more subtle exhaust note. Considering I bought this car for her, (at least that's my story) I'll let her decide,...maybe?
Looking at the front grille, what emblem would have been original for this car? If you'll notice it doesn't have one. I'm also curious, was the cat hood ornament an option?
I'm wondering what information my vin # can provide?

Cat hood ornament not stock... the curved tailpipes make the sound softer and the exhaust smell less when the windows are down at stops... I purposely put them onto my car even though the Jaguar size exhaust OD is very small.. tired of loud cars.
The smaller great looking steering wheel makes a big difference... the stock school bus sized wheels makes the sporty S1 feel "slower" in turning.
Hope you got a good one coming... help is here if you need it in the future.. there is always something that needs fixing on these old cars.

Don't mean to dominate this board with hundreds of questions, but I am an uniformed Jaguar owner right now.
Did that trunk (boot) come upholstered or was that something the original owner had done? Not sure why anyone would want their boot prettied up that much. This car was owned by a "famous" western artist. I'm now the third owner.
Just curious

My short term memory might be fuzzy, but, I recall reading the presentation by the seller mentions a custom upholstery job in the boot. My car a later model, but, the boot trim is a lot different. Carpeted on the floor and sides and bare under the lid. It has survived the ages well. Looks near pristine.
I'm not sure as to any difference in noise or power in straight exhaust tips vs the curved ones. I kept the "s" pipes and the jaguar mufflers and after market glass packs as resonators. It is clearly a V8 sound. But, not loud. Like Rodger, my days of noisy pipes are done for. Although, the project before the Jaguar involved a warmed up flat head Ford V8, headers and straight pipes. Not all that rackety at idle or a bit of pedal, but add some and yoweeee, OK..
My victory lap on getting the lump to not only run, but roll was on open down pipes.
Slick, oh yeah.... The trip to the muffler shop went that way.

My trunk is done up "neatly" as well - picture taken before cleaning up the chalk marks and vacuuming.. I do have one of on my lid underneath that is totally covered up like a VDP...yours looks GREAT to me...might not make your neighbors too happy about your new car by making a lot of noise...

Roger,
Your trunk looks very nice and more of what I imagine a trunk to look like. Don't get me wrong I love the fancy trunk in mine its just more than I would do if I were installing. It's so nice I'll have to line it with something to pick up the groceries.

Yeah, each of my cars has a rubber pad in the cargo compartment. Why, defies logic.
As most stuff I might put in there would cause no damage. It is grey and similar in appearance to alloy fish plate, but rubber. very flexible and of course, easlly removed and washed.
That is one very nice car, no doubt about it.
I've had mine since 2001. Not bought for resale. Still not for sale. Would I get more than I invested? Not even close. If measured in $'s ! In other ways, oh yeah....

Everyone started out at the beginning sometime, perhaps even Doug and Grant (although I'm not sure Grant had a beginning) so any questions you have, please ask. It allows the rest of us to dust off our experiences and say, "I know the answer to that!" and share it.
Not only that, someone out there is doubtless too shy to ask in public, but has the same question, so if you ask it, that person and perhaps many others benefit from your bravery.
I agree about rattling the neighbors' windows, and I'd do that if I lived on a real street.
I'm thinking your trunk/boot was refurbished by a previous owner. It looks way too nice to be stock after all these decades.
My car (Series 2) has Numerous Series 3 trim bits, most notably the grille, tail lights and trunk plinth.
Those are a few of the reasons I fell in love with her at first sight (besides the BLACK paint and 4 doors); I can't imagine going back to driving a Brand X full time.
If I had the garage space I would Seriously consider building up an Xj6 as an all weather daily driver.
On second thought, given the Xj6's lack of reliable wipers and how much rain we get even in a relatively dry year, maybe not.
Oops, I almost forgot;
Congratulations on your 'new' Jaguar!
Welcome to our playroom from ElinorB.

How much cutting of the bodywork was involved in getting the lights & grille to fit Ellinor? I actually thought your car was a S3, & I've only just noticed the higher waistline & lower glasshouse. Did you do the mods, or did you buy it that way?
