Nothing wrong that a few thousand dollars will not fix.. plus a lot of labor.. have had two S1 conversions... converting to fuel injection is expensive and labor intensive... looks like a solid car for someone to finish up.

My main focus is a rust free care with good Chrome and decent paint and interior. Other mechanicals and electrical systems I expect to have issues with.

So I understand the windscreen wipers aren't functioning and supposedly The Brits made these extremely completed? How big of a deal are these to sort out?

looks nice, reasonable price for $6500.
When i went to get a roadworthy certificate for my car, the mechanic commented the wipers were not working properly, they werent travelling far enough across the screen.
I'm hoping swapping the motor will do the trick, not hard to do, take off the wipers, unbolt the motor and pull it out. if the new motor isnt much better i will have the old one rebuilt.

The tanks are easy to remove, so they shouldnt be too hard to put back in. That should solve the fuel gauge problem. EFI is up to you, i dont know the difference in drive.

I was referring to the comments by the seller... wipers even when working 100% are poor... never understood that since they get a lot of rain in the UK.. easy enough to make
work like when new... looks like it is worth the asking price... I paid $4500.00 USD in 1992 for my '71 XJ with about the same engine and trans...spent much more over the years
since making "it better"...

Roger,
I know what your referring to about the wiper performance. My '74 TR6 wipers are useless too! I guess it was a '70's thing.

They're all way better than the old vacuum controlled wipers that 50s cars had! They'd go faster, the faster the engine revved. So crawling through city traffic in a downpour was very "interesting".

the complaint with any XJ has always been the lame wipers, they cannot keep up with heavy rain.

the irony is that my 1965 S type has better wiping action and speed than the wipers in my 1984 XJ-6.

so you need to get used to it, the XJ wipers are LAME. Their cable system sucks.

The car looks good paint-wise but it does not have the original engine, it's a conversion car, the price is high for a conversion car. $3,500. would be more realistic. If you try to sell it later, you will not get $6,500. back.

go around it with a magnet to see how much bondo it has on it, the Series 1 XJ were very prone to rusting especially in the northern states. The rocker panels in particular.

open the trunk, remove the spare tire compartment cover, remove the spare tire, and take a good look at the FLOOR of the compartment, usually they rust badly there i f it is a northern car.

Good luck!

It also has a series 2 plinth on the boot and a series 2 rear bumper.
Maybe it has had a repair from accident damage.

A very presentable car. And, I am impressed by the seller's presentation. The good and the history and the no so good. Will the AC hold a charge? After a long dormancy, probably not.

But, it seems the warts and engine swap are inconsistent with the low original
mileage???? A tough life in AZ? At that miles, it should be durn near pristine original.

I am curious as to what the tag says as to who did the conversion. A SOCAL outfit. They may or may no longer exist but, a definite clue as to the quality of the install.

If bound for CA, it is SMOG exempt. A great +. And if n ot, the fact that it is is good for value. Market not limited.

I respectfully disagree with Jose, as to the value being less as it no longer has the DOHC. But, I do think that it's old tech SBC and TH 350 do lessen it's value. EFI
and OD would enhance it's value. I admit my bias. My car is a "conversion". I did it and am quite proud of it and me for pulling it off. It wasn't easy...

I suspect the price is negotiable. Mebbe down to circa 5K. Letting him keep the Nardi might get a substantial discount. The taste thing or the originalty issue.

Yeah, my Jaguar's wipers work almost as designed. Too small, too slow.... And the self park s well. It takes a special nude on the stalk to park them at times. Odd, in view of the clime in their home .

Yeah, vacuum motor wipers. I remember them well. At idle or cruise, they sweep away happily. Stomp on the throttle and they stop, at times, when needed most!!!!
Later versions had boosters on the mechanical fuel pump. Much better, but short of the electrics.

Carl

Definitely, one worthy of a lot of thinking ands not easy to walk away from.
