Default F Type R Transmission

Can you over rev, or shift into too low a gear when in Manual Sport with Dynamic Mode set? I want to confirm the car will save me from myself before I do something regrettable. In prior BMW M cars I was saved on several occasions.
Thanks.

The car will not downshift if it detects that your shift will "over-rev" the engine. This applies to all F-TYPEs.

Follow up: Will it cut power if you hit the rev limiter in Dynamic Sport Manual? Thanks.

It will stop at the rev limiter. Don't try this in first - I once hit the rev limiter in 1st accidentally, and the sound coming out the tailpipe was epic, though not in a good way.

the VAP tune eliminated that nasty cacophony when you hit the rev limit.

The way this car bangs into the rev limiter is very startling. The nose of the car dives, what feels like, at least 5 inches and the car feels like you actually hit some sort of wall or something. It is not a pleasant thing to do.

Note to self--shift before car cuts power. Good to know that you can't damage the car, but your ego is another matter. Thanks guys.

No longer the case with the VAP tune. Just runs out of steam at 7000rpm.

This has happened to me a couple times, where I miss the shift and bang off the rev limiter with a very aggressive back and forth jerk for a couple seconds. Curious as to what sort of strain this puts on the transmission and wondering if anyone has blown one as a result.

Interesting. I wonder if my 6-speed has this feature? Will experiment tonight and report back.

... kidding!

Not to worry, it will happen to you. The OEM tune has a sudden, violent and nasty sounding redline cutout. As I mentioned before, the VAP tune just gently suspends any further acceleration.

It's rather embarrassing if you think you're in 2nd leaving pit row, but you're actually in 1st and hit the rev limiter. The sounds out of the tailpipe are epic, though not very nice.

At least, that's what I've heard.

I heard that cacophony a number of times before the VAP tune. First gear is so low on the MT that 7000rpm is a far more natural shift point than the 6800rpm OEM rev limit, when reaching for the horizon. The VAP tune raises the rev limit to just over 7000rpm and eliminates the mortar fire when you hit it.

Just a little side note. I am arrogant. I feel I'm one of the best drivers to walk this Earth. Years of motorcycle road racing have made me feel immortal in a car. Class championships, My name in Road Racing World. New Racing Licensing instructor, Head Instructor of a large track day company and lots of other stuff to make me sound like a big deal. I have finally determined that the Jag's transmission in Sport Mode may actually be better than me. At the track, the difference in lap times was not noticeable. On the street, I have never hit the Rev limiter when in Auto mode. Sometime I pop it into manual, but that's mainly for the sound of a more aggressive downshift. When driving hard, the downshifting is quite impressive, too. I just let the car do its thing, Prior to this car, I had many, many sticks. For many years, I would only buy sticks. Now, I don't mind the auto.

I was referring to downshifting a gear (or two) too far. Pretty hard to do by accident, but it could happen in theory (knock on wood).
