Default Flywheel?

I'm working on a P0171 issue, lean bank 1. It seems impossible to get a clear answer to which side of the car is bank 1. I thought I knew, but the more I search for a definitive answer the more I'm uncertain.

The JTS says, "References to Bank-1 and Bank-2 are made with regard to the engine. When viewed from the flywheel the right-hand bank will be Bank-1 and the left-hand bank will be Bank-2." Well, I guess you have to know what they're referring to by flywheel. LOL

I've also read that bank 1 refers to the side with cylinder 1, which for the x350 appears to be the left hand side if I'm standing in front of the car.

All I need is a simple answer - if I'm standing in front of the car, which side is bank 1? Thanks, anyone ... do I feel stupid or what ...

Hi kbeachy,

Here's the chart from one of the Jaguar Vehicle Specifications books. The diagram on the right applies to the X350:

So if you are standing at the front of the car looking at the engine, Bank 1 is on your left, and cylinder 1 is closest to you.

P.S. For the record, if your car has an automatic transmission, it doesn't even have a flywheel. Instead, it has a "Drive Plate" or "Flex Plate."

Cheers,

Don

The flywheel, flexplate, or whatever a particular car has, is in between the engine and the transmission. Therefore, with a RWD car such as the X350 the flywheel would be at the back of the engine. If you're sitting behind the steering wheel, bank 1 is on the right, from the front of the car everything has been turned around and bank 1 is now on the left.
