Geez, I just sold a vehicle after spending big bucks chasing down an evap system 'very small leak'.
Bought a scanner and diagnostic tool to see how my new old 2003 XKR is looking. The results were quite satisfying until I triggered an evap system test. Failed and not a lot more information was gained.
Can I beg the gurus for some suggestions on where to begin this odessy?

I'm amazed how often members go looking for trouble.

1. is the vehicle running OK - leave it alone
2. is there an error message - scan for DTC's

With anything except SDD and a genuine Drew Tech Mongoose Pro, I wouldn't be doing anything more than reading and clearing codes.

This is the first leak, a small crack under the gear clamp attached to the CCV.
I spent about 2 years tracking down that pesky code. I found a small crack in a u shaped rubber hose goes into the CCV (cannister close valve). To get that hose you have to buy the whole assembly of aluminum pipe from Jag for over $200.

I took the hose behind the counter at the parts store and they let find a hose in the formed hose racks with a similar shape. For $7 it worked, sort of. The message only came up once a month instead of once a week. This past winter with my emmision test approaching I got into it again. I took the CCV apart and found that corrosion had made small leaks leading into the surface the diaphragm seals against. I got a new CCV and all has been right with the world.
it is awkward to install but doable. The CCV is located entering the vapor cannister above the passenger side rear axle.
My car is a 2004 xk8 with 115,000 miles.

 

I went through evap leak hell with my last Volvo. Took forever to find it on my own. Ended up being a cracked hose in the most inaccessible space possible (of course). Good luck!
