Hi Guys,

I've been battling getting my hub off to change the bearings all day. Sometimes when you get tired you miss something obvious. Let me please ask your thoughts on this. ( I've never seen this discussed so I'm cautious).

Next steps: Unscrew the ABS sensor to get access to and press out the hub.

Issue: Lack of easy access to a big enough vice, or proper Jaguar tool to imobilize the hub while I unscrew the ABS sensor with my impact wrench.

As I recall RaceDiagnostics made himself a template with plywood for this.
Great idea, I'm just running out of time and want to get this done without rushing things.

Something struck me today as I looked at the wheel and tire assembly and thought of Race's template. BAM - then it hit me. It looks like I've got a premade template sitting right in front of me! The wheel itself.

I turned the wheel over - What if i placed the wheel hub assembly I just took off the car right into the back of the wheel / tire. Bolts through the bolt holes. I would probably finger tighten the wheel bolts to secure things.

It looks like it is supported, imobilized and safe. (sounds too easy right?)

Then I could use the impact wrench to remove the ABS ring as I sat on the tire. It sure looks like it would imobilize things.

What do you think? It seems safe to me, but heck I've missed more obvious things before. In your opinion will this work as expected?

I think I'll wait to get your thoughts before I move forward on this one.

Hey if you endorse this idea, do you agree there is no need to position the rotor in between the hub and wheel while I remove the ABS?

That should work. I made holes in my plywood workbench to secure the assembly. I would tighten the nuts so they don't enlarge the holes.

of us, I must have blurred your names about this one. Thank you for the tip.

I'll let everyone know how I do tomorrow. I was probably too cautious. The same connection I'm describing bears the weight of the entire car all day long.

Lets hope you impact wrench does not spin your wheel, mine did not want to come off.

I have a front hub, taken off my xk8, in my garage ready to get a new bearing:

So waiting to see if this works, with an impact gun it may do!!
What I have noticed is that the hub which came off my facelift does not have a through hole in centre, whereas the one I got from ebay did: possibly from an earlier model hub or xj8? it also had a thinner backplate for the wheel bolts.

The reason I mention this is that without a vice for the hub with no hole you probably cant use a threaded rod to disassemble.

 

Hope the impact gun works for you as the assembly looks pretty clean.

I'd be tempted to remove the ABS sensor in case anything slips. The replacements are priced as if they're made of platinum
