Basically changing the diff ratio without adjusting the software throws the car into limp mode.

This would not be the case with the manual transmission though...
OK, I read most of that thread, and understand that the TCU is doing some level of confirmation of the right final drive ratio to assure proper shift points. However, in that scenario, the desired change was from 2.87:1 to 3.31:1, a 15% change. In the case of the F-type V6 diffs, the change is from 3.16:1 to 3.31:1, a 5% change. I'm guessing that the sensors are not accurate enough for the TCU to throw a fault for a 5% difference. Maybe, and it's enough to make me reconsider if I want to do it when my base convertible comes off warranty. Might be simpler to just swap to a used V6S manual at that point to get the LSD and the fun of rowing my own gears. Thanks for all the input. This is what's great about this forum.

Retro fitting e-diffs is a long discussed topic in the Land Rover Discovery world. No idea how much if any might apply to a Jag but if anyone is interested here is a link to a thread from someone who successfully did it.

The modern vehicles with manual transmissions that I am familar with have not needed any software changes if the diff ratio has been changed, but the automatic versions have needed this.

I think it's because the ratio's in the transmission are not fixed i.e. you can ride the clutch and change the effective ratio of every gear, so it's not something that is used to throw up codes or limp modes.

Also...

I checked out the wiring diagrams for the 2005 S-Type 2.7L diesel which uses a similar ZF six-speed manual transmission to the one in the F-Type, there is no output speed sensor on that tranny, so no way for the electronics to recognise a change in diff ratio.

Default It's possible! LSD in a base F type!

6 weeks ago I had swapped the standard open Diff in my 2016 F type for the Diff from a V6s (as you guys described above). I was wary about the issues stated In the above thread and spoke in depth with a Jaguar specialist about the possibility of coding the car to a new diff ratio... The result was much simpler, a direct swap with no software updates - 1500miles later, there are no error codes or issues! I'll post if anything changes!

I have to say this modification has transformed the car, the high torque and stiff rear end made it handful in the wet and less stable at speed on windy roads. The car feels so much more predictable and composed - I'd recommend this to any base v6 owner that wants to push their car!

How much did all that cost if you don't mind me asking?

In the meantime, I know of an XK that was fitted with a 3.58 in place of the original 3.31, and an XF that was fitted with 3.31 in place of the original 3.07, and no faults or limp mode.

On the XF it was reported that the traction control seemed to cut in a bit earlier, more aggressively than before. The guy with the XK drives it with the traction control off all the time so nothing noted there.

So small changes in ratios seem to fall within an allowable tolerance, the bigger jumps cause the problems.

I'm in the UK so it's in £...
£800 for the second hand diff from the V6s
£750 for fitting and 4 wheel alignment (as the rear sub frame has to be lowered from the car) this included a diff oil change, new seals and new drive shaft bolts for good measure)

Good to note that the LSD has different oil spec to the none LSD diff.

This is great news.

So dropping the F-type V6S LSD into the V6 XE should be no problem.

Hi Richard, could you give us an update on your F Type with the LSD swap? Specifically, do you have any complaints regarding the differential or traction control?

I have a used carrier on the way to me, I will be swapping over the next month or so and will keep you all updated.

Hi- sort of but not really. The LSD is sitting in a box. I have purchased a QuickJack, new axle seals, and am ready to take a shot at the install (along with the pulley). Now that the weather is cooling, I will be more interested in taking her off the road.

For what it's worth I have a V6S LSD swapped into mine and it was just a bolt-in affair. No issues whatsoever. Night and day difference. Definitely recommend.

Nope. Just about as straightforward as it could be.
