I have both the remote & valet keys that work & start the car (2004 Jaguar XJ). If I try to add a 3rd key using the DIY method and it does not work, will the 2 working keys stop working?

You cannot diy program with just one key. You can program remotes.

I think you have to have two functioning black keys in order to program any more with the 'DIY' method; I don't think a valet key counts.

With only one black key your only option is via IDS/SDD software.

You can use the transponder in the Valet key as the second. I've used that method, and know it is valid.

Interesting. That was using a ordinary key and a green valet key ?

The valet transponder is exactly the same as the others, the valet function is a physical difference in the key.

Ah, interesting again. So presumably the blade of a valet key has a slightly different key code, or lacks one of the machined facets (or has an extra one).

Yes the difference is in the tip.

(Thanks to Graham for the pic)

The code for the key, and its facets and angles are exactly the same for the vehicle. What is different is the width and shape of the tip itself, which is beyond the cut portion of the key.

So if I use the remote key & Valet key to program a 3rd key (DIY method), and it does not work, will the working keys remain working?

Programming transponders does not erase the current transponders. You would need SDD to erase transponders. When working with the remote, that does erase all remotes, and you will need any remotes you wish to program at that time. These are two separate issues.

Just brought home a 2004 XJ8 with only one fob. The lock unlock micro switches are slow to react and the key locks but does not unlock the driver's door (feels like no resistance in the lock when trying to unlock it).
It starts the car fine and we drove the 2 hours home.
So, do we think the ignition lock has been changed and this key is for that lock and as seems to be known any key will lock any X350? Or do we think there is an issue with the driver's door lock? I guess I need to try the key in the trunk lock next time I am at the car (my daughter is out in it now).

I have a Mongoose clone thing and used it to add more keys to our XJR, so will be looking to buy a new/used fob and blank key and transponder and have the dealer cut a key (but need to know whether to go by VIN number or the key that starts the car) and reprogram/confirm the transponders and the fobs to the car.

I think that you will need to remove the driver's door card and see what the problem is there.

I have repaired two door actuators in the past but have not stripped the driver's door.

I may be just a matter of lubeing the lock or a broken linkage.

You could try a new battery in the remote and clean press button contacts if you are able.

The DDM is in there and you could check the plug/socket for corrosion also.

Thanks. I cleaned the micro switches and it is a little better, I ordered a new key and fob off Ebay and will hopefully end up with a working remote from that.
The key does unlock the trunk. There is no resistance when trying to unlock the drivers door within the lock, compared to the feeling when locking it there, I wonder if the car was broken into at some point.
I will try lube in the lock, but maybe it will need dismantling.
At least the new remote should give confidence that we can get into the car in the future.

I recently purchased a 2005 XJR from the auction. The only key with the car is the valet. Do I have to go to the dealer to order the full function key, or is there a less expensive course of action?

Unfortunately, you need 2 keys to be able to program additional keys. The Valet key can be one of them, but you will need another key, and unless you can get the previous owner to find it, that means a trip to a dealer where they will re-program the system and sell you a new key fob for a couple hundred bucks. :-(

You have 2 issues to deal with
1. Physical/mechanical actauation of the key in the doors/trunk/ignition. The keys can be purchased pre-cut from online sellers (read here) once you provide them your tibbe key code . Read this post on how to decode your key.
2. Fob programming/security. As you only have one (valet) key you'll have to get access to the jaguar diagnostics program SDD to program new fob(s) to your vehicle. Obviously dealers have SDD but you maybe able to find independent repair shops with it or even a friendly forum member in your locality that will do it for you. (you could PM motorcarman who is in Decatur to see if he'll help you)
