Help with Oil Pressure gauge
Hi all
ive been doing some work and upgrades on my 86 XJ6 lately and the last one i was planning on doing was upgrading the lights for the instrument gauges
today when i went out for a ride i realized my oil pressure gauge was not working (it was working prior to any rooting around behind the gauges)
it would go to 40 when the key was initially turned but as soon as the engine started it would erratically jump around before going well below 0 and no longer moving
from what ive been reading the oil pressure sender is a common culprit but due to the fact i was rooting around behind the gauges i have a feeling i mustve knocked something loose or shorted something by mistake
(it still very well may be the oil pressure sender i dont know enough to rule it out)
when getting home i removed some of the gauges to see if there were any obviously loose wires and i couldnt find anything however during and after doing this the oil pressure gauge began to do the opposite in which it would act erractically and then go instantly to 80 and not budge again.
ive attached a few videos that will hopefully be able to allow someone with more knowledge to suggest where i should look and what i should test for.
in the video labeled 4290 i realize the headlight switch is causing the gauge to max out without the engine on im guessing this has something to do with the fact the bracket in the back that holds the gauge in place grounds the gauge and with it removed the power from the instrument light is causing it to activate i somewhat confirmed this by both removing the light to which the headlight switch no longer effected it and reinstalling the bracket.
in the video labeled 4291 the bracket is still removed but the headlights are off this still caused the gauge to max out which im guessing is again a grounding issue as it does not behave like this with the bracket installed
in the video labeled 4292 i have reinstalled all gauges and their respective brackets and it began to behave similarly to my original problem in which it would rise as normal when the key is turned (but the engine not on) and then begin to bounce erratically when the engine came on however with a slight rev it jumped past 80 as opposed to settling below 0 which was my inital problem.
i will be testing with an external gauge to see what my actual pressure is as i recently had the oil cooler hoses replaced and i want to make sure nothing weird is going on there however the pressure was reading fine between having those replaced and my messing with the gauges so i doubt there are any issues but i will test to be safe.
any help is greatly appreciated, im very new to electrical work so you might have to hold my hand slightly i only intended to start with upgrading the lights as a means to get my feet wet but it seems i have inadvertantly shoved myself into the deep end.
Note: i did not change or intentionally unplug anything from behind the gauges when initally pulling them out i only went to look to see how and where the lights connected to the gauges
