Like many, I had the dreaded DRL failure caused by the melted black oculator of the PU2 series headlight.
I considered buying a PUXA series replacement with the white oculator but the dealership wanted $7,000 CAN
Because the problem was the black oculator melting and fusing to the light guide, thus melting the light guide and impairing its ability to transmit light, I figured a better solution was to change out the light guide and oculator - basically upgrading a PU2 to a PUXA.
There's a chap in Germany who replaces the top portion of the light guide, then cuts and polishes the old light guide and butts them together. I considered using his services but some customers have complained that it's still dimmer than stock, which makes sense since the light has to pass through two planes. The vast majority of his customers seem very happy with it though.
The main problem for me is that he does the Eurospec lights with a white reflector. In order for me to use his services I'd have to ship my old, orange reflector unit over to Germany, wait until he repaired it and shipped it back, and then install it.That could be a month or more of my car sitting around with the bumper off and headlight missing, undriveable.
And - perhaps this is just me - it seemed more elegant to replace the entire light guide not just the upper portion.
Removing the lens and resealing along the lens seat, rather than cutting around the body of the assembly then gluing it back together also made the most sense to me.
It's resealed with the same black silicone as those doing the cut'n'shut method, but by removing the old lens that left the possibility of replacing the lens as well. The old "since I'm there" repair cascade.
I posted this in an F Type facebook group and the next day someone who had in the past tried to get me to partner with them and sell me a jig commented by posting photos of a melted light guide they got through Alibaba, and falsely implied that they got it from me. I'm not in the business of selling Jag parts as a business - I just have a few complete units kicking around my garage should other owners in the same boat as me be interested. They're Canada/US spec with the orange reflector.
