Default Transmission issues

Did a cold start with an xj40 ‘94. It started only in neutral, and the gearbox is difficult to get in gear. Especially between neutral and drive, the gear stick does not want to stay in place. Would anybody know what the issue is?

Hello Alexander,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.

Regarding your shift problem, it's possible something is broken in the J-gate gear selector assembly. See the diagram below:

It is also possible there is a problem with the gear shift cable or the rotary switch on the left side of the transmission. The switch is Part 1 in the diagram below. To access the switch, remove the two screws, Parts 6, that secure the cover, Part 5. The first thing I would check is the mounting screw and stud for the switch to see if one or both are loose or broken:

Also, please visit the New Member Area - Intro a MUST and post a required introduction so we can learn something about you and your Jaguar and give you a proper welcome.

Cheers,

Don
