1994 xj12 - ignition coil pack

Default 1994 xj12 - ignition coil pack

I have a 1994 Jaguar XJ12 I rescued from a barn find. This car has been sitting for 13 years.

I took it to my mechanic and he wanted 10 hours worth of Labor just to change the coil pack. I cannot afford this so going to tackle this project alone.

Some questions.
1. How do I change the Ignition Coil
2. Which Spec would of Ignition Coil. 1994 XJ40 XJ12. 71k Miles.
3. Is this a difficult job. 10 hours seems very long.
4. Where can i find videos or information how to do this?

There are four screws holding that central plastic cover down. Underneath that plastic cover are the ignition coils.
There are two of them, sort of in a stacked arrangement, one above the other just in front of the central throttle capstan and behind the distributor.
They are NOT difficult to change so your "mechanic" who quoted you ten hours to change these coils was a real rip-off artist.
However that being said I would certainly do some more diagnostic work to determine that the coils actually are faulty.
It is quite common for the ignition rotor inside the distributor to burn through.
Your best resource for this car is the XJS Help Guide written and published by Kirby Palm as a freely available book in pdf format.
This 1994 XJ12 (XJ81) has the same ignition and EFI system as the later XJS Jaguars with the Marelli ignition so all of the information in Kirby's book about the issues with the Marelli ignition applies to this car.
BTW, these are NOT "coil packs". These are two individual coils with coil wires running from the top of each coil and connecting to the top of the distributor cap.
The term "coil packs" typically refers to a type of ignition coil where multiple ignition wires from the spark plugs plug directly into multiple spark towers on a single coil and there is no distributor.
The 1995 - 1996 XJ12 did have a totally different ignition system made by Denso which did have two six cylinder coil packs but this 1994 as you have shown does NOT have "coil packs"

If you search for "XJS Help Guide Kirby Palm" on google you should find multiple links to the downloadable copy of Kirby's book.

as above,

the two individual coils are centrally mounted and run a separate ignition 'king lead ' to the distributor cap ,

Magneti Marelli items are high quality , and hard to obtain original items, aftermarket are available, but i would advocate buying original to maintain your car properly

with that in mind

i have brand new pair of genuine Magneti Marelli coils for your car for sale if your interested





changing them out is tricky , but not a difficult task, i would say two to three hours max for a willing novice to change,
