I've been chasing vacuum leaks at the engine & I found leakage where the two hard lines go into the top of the manifold, the lines are fairly new but the inserts that you push down to unlock these lines are worn...
What i'm wanting to know is, can these rings be purchased separately & can they be changed by a shadetree mechanic.

Yes, the pieces are able to be replaced by just about anyone. I think you are going to find the hard part to be getting the new clips that go in there. I would recommend going to the local auto parts store and look in their miscellaneous parts area and see what you can find. I do not think that they come as part of a new hose assembly.

 

I inquired at the dealer. $15.00 for the kit, throw away the brass insert and use the rest,a do-it yourself job, in stock.

 

By the looks of your brake booster hose, you are leaking at the middle "bulb" in the hose, as it shouldn't look all white and cracked like that. If you don't want to buy a new brake booster hose ($70) then you can always get some large heat-shrink tubing and seal over that large area in the middle of the hose.

I thought the same thing, but when i did the carb cleaner check at the bulb, no change in engine idle.
I did find engine stumble at those inserts on top of the manifold.

The vac lines have what they call "Chinese fingers" to hold the line in,just push down the center and pull out the line, use a small screwdriver to fish out the "o ring" and holding fingers, insert the new one but don't use the brass sleeve because it's pressed in. No need to remove intake just don't break the hard plastic line, it's the "o ring" that drys out and leaks. If it's a long way to the dealer fish out the "o ring" take it to the hardware store with a good selection of "o rings" stick the "O ring" back in.( get the exact size) or you won't get the line back in, also there are black "o rings and there are green/ or greyish ones. Black ones don't hold up under heat as well as the others but at least you will know if it was the problem. Auto stores carry the ones for automotive use.A Hardware store usually has a good selection,grab a 1/2 dozen there cheap.

 

Seal that check valve up anyways because it will eventually leak even if you don't think it is now.

I had the same thought this weekend, and to that end I decided to try the Plastic Dip stuff you put on Pliers and such...
After a few days It's still handling the heat of the engine.

I bought some o-rings from NAPA last night, unfortunately they were the wrong size (OD) so will try again today, took some pics of what's in there though...

A bit of a struggle to pull the plastic locking ring out since I want to reuse it, but as long as it's not brittle from all the heat you'll be fine

Went to a nearby Pick-A-Part yard with my oldest this weekend, I needed a new washer nozzle (don't like the idea of paying $40.00 new) found a set from a VW which fit. Also found the O-Rings for my intake manifold, got a set from a late model Mercury Cougar (3.0 V6).

I did try the local Ford and Mercury dealers. The kits are obsolete, and the o-rings are not listed separately. The Ford parts guy slapped a box of generic o-rings on the counter, but of course, none would work.

I asked the service guy what his mechanics do when they get a Cougar or Contour in with this problem. His response? "We don't get too many of those in for service any more." In other words, as usual, we know more about the problem than the dealer does.

For now I have two smaller cross section o-rings stuffed in each hole. It seems to be working better than the old hard ones.

This may seem crazy but while i was junkyard trolling with my son i checked every ford V6 motor looking for the O-rings, found 2 good ones after pulling 6 or 7 apart. Maybe you have a pick-a-part junkyard nearby...

My twin o-rings didn't work, but now problem solved. After visiting Ford, Lincoln Merc, 5 auto parts stores, and 3 hardware stores, I got a tip about a non-franchise parts store with a good selection of o-rings.

Lo and behold.... o-ring nirvana! They must have had 200 sizes! I selected 3 sizes that were very close to the original, and now I'm fixed. No leaks, no codes, good idle.
