Default 2002 Jaguar X-Type transmission

We just bought a 2002 Jaguar X Type, and the transmission just
quits working, like it would if it was suddenly put into neutral.
Does anybody know what the problem could be. It drives just fine
at lower speeds, but quits working at higher speeds.
The wealthy huy we bought it from neglected to mention the issue
I guess that is how he became wealthy is by taking advantage of the little guy!
Is there another transmission that can be used other than the factory one?

jetlag, if the tranny goes into neutral, I would first start with verifying that you have proper fluid level in the tranny. If the level is too low, it will not develop enough pressure to engage the tranny. The same may be true in that you are aerating the tranny fluid at higher speeds and this is resulting in the pump cavitating, causing a loss of pump pressure. Granted, could be a tranny pump that is on its way out and it is not building pressure at higher RPMs. So, I would check fluid level first and then see what you have.

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X-Type forum. This is the place to post technical questions about your 2002 X-Type.

I have decided to buy a used luxury car. My logic is the 1st owners likely had it serviced regularly so it will be in really good condition, they also seem to hold their value well. My concern is replacement parts. Are they too much to make it worth my while?

No. But service history is everything in this regard.
