Default 2006 X type tacho not going back to zero?

Can anyone help me? I have a 2006 X type AWD 3.0ltr auto, in Australia. The tacho has decided to sit at 7000 rpm when the engine is switched off, and with the engine on , reads 9000 at idle and when driving the needle is pointing south, off the scale. All very annoying. The engine and everything else is working fine, just that the tacho reading seems to have moved almost 180 degrees out of where it should be. Is there a simple reset procedure? I have checked all fuses and no problems found.

If you have the message display in your gauges, you can go to the diagnostics mode. To do this, hold the button on the end of your stalk, while going from position 0 to II with your key. Continue to hold button till display says something like "test mode". To scroll between all modes, just tap button on stalk. There's a light test, and then a gauge test, which will normally force all the gauges to reset to their zero spot.

Hope this helps.
