Default 2006 x-type vibration

HI Guys,

I have a vibration as I get on the highway around 60MPH and up, its perfect up untill then with no steering wheel vibration. I have read all the post and read a lot on tire balance issues but I have had them balanced and they are all good. I then bought a 2nd set of wheels and balanced again and still vibrating at the same MPH.
I put the car on the lift today and ran the car and watched the driveshaft and niticed its not a 100% true up by the transmission. Its slightly out of round and you can clearly see it moving up and down. I plan on having the driveshaft tested by local driveshaft company to see if its balanced properly and perfectly round. I will post my results after I get it back.
Also does anybody know if a 2002 x-type diveshaft compatible with my 06?
Thank You

Same thing with me at highway speeds. The shop will look into it Thursday. In the meantime, google TSB XT100-08. Although your model year is not involved, it might help. Good luck.

I went to three different Driveshaft Specialist shops in Baltimore this morning and none of them can do anything with it. They said that driveshaft is made to be non-serviceable and the couplers necessary to put it in a balancing machine are not even available. They can't replace the carrier bearing or anything else on it. One shop said the carrier bearing was making too much noise. They all say to just order a remanufactured unit from the dealer.

Called 4 different dealers and got 4 different prices. Best dealer price I've seen so far is $525. Worst was $787. All require an additional $231 core charge which will be refunded when you bring your old driveshaft back in for return.

I did see $455 online, free shipping, plus a free label to ship your old one back. May be the way to go.

BLue, get an alignment done on your car. I bet you will find that the shaking will go away. if the front end alignment is out just a little bit, it will cause the shaking that you are talking about.

Here ya go: 2003 Jaguar X Type Drive Shaft - Jaguar X Type Driveline - Free Shipping

I am also ordering the coupler gaskets for each end of the shaft. The TSB discusses these gaskets, which were nowhere to be found on my vehicle. I found those on ebay. For $27 each. Dealers want $33 each.

Here is the driveshaft TSB: http://www.jagrepair.com/images/TSB/...0Vibration.pdf

Keep in mind, this is for 2002-2006 X-Types. Yours is a 2006, may be a different issue. I'd take a careful look here: http://www.jagrepair.com/X-TypeTSB.htm

HI Guys,

Thank you for the info.
I had gotten a used 2002 driveshaft for next to nothing and I am going to just try it and see what happens. I will post results.

Also wanted to to share with everybody that when I had my car on the lift and running it up to 70MPH and went to go hit the brakes the dash light up with the check engine and ABS, had to reset with Snap On Modis.
The car knew the front wheels were spinning slower than the rear wheels and threw a code. If anybody tries this procedure make sure you have a good scanner to reset the code.

Mine threw the ABS and Check Engine too, during the same procedure.

The ABS light went off *** soon as I was back on the ground.

The check engine light went off after 5 or so ignition starts. It's preset for some number of starts. No code reader needed.

Hi Chris,

Is an alignment with all the arrows (on the printout) in the "green zone" considered acceptable ?

Thanks.

X2004, yes, granted, the alignment specs changed a little over the years and not all the shops may have gotten the updated numbers.

DRIVESHAFT!!! I just swapped the driveshaft and its definitly the problem. Its nice and smooth now however there is a very slight vibration and a minor shake in the steering wheel. Now I beleive this is a tire balancing issue.

So just a recap, I did nothing to the car except swap the driveshaft and vibration is now gone, no washers, no ligning up marks, no alignment, nothing. the driveshaft has a 150K from an 02 x-type , it fit right in with no problem. Im not saying you dont have to allign it or anything but maybe I got extremely lucky?

I hope this helps others from throwing money at tires, road force balancing alignments etc.

Forgot to mentions, the reason why I didnt align the driveshaft is because there were no marks on it. I cleaned it up real good to see if I could see anything but I didnt see anything anywhere, so I decided to just try it.

Did you ever find a shop who could test your old driveshaft? Because no one in Baltimore could test mine.

OK, so one balancing the wheels (again) and two spinning the wheels on the lift" later by 2 different shops (the tire one and my shop/dealer), it is the DRIVESHAFT... My shop/dealer is going to replace it and hopefully it will solve my issue.

I want to thank everybody so much for all your help and your input, you have no idea the difference it makes when you bring the car in for some troubleshooting.

Again, thanks a million!

How does a driveshaft become: "slightly out of round"? Did the car ever bottom out on a steep driveway or did you run over something on the road that contacted the bottom?

In this case, the driveshafts were prone to failure. Jaguar issued a TSB for the issue on 2002-2004 vehicles.

Funny you should ask how does it become out of round, thats the million dollar question. I had recently (6 months ago) bought the car from Florida and shame on me I didnt take the car for a long enough test ride and did not reach speeds of 60+. The car drove perfect and the owner did not disclose it either, so I had bought it. So when I started the trip home I felt the vibration and said it must just be tires untill I started doing research.

Anyway when I lifted the car I expected to see some damage from a speed bump or somthing but it was as clean as teh day it was born because of the Florida weather. No sign of any damage whatsoever on the driveshaft, so I ask the same question everytime I think about it. The drive shaft looks like I just bought it, the center bearing is tight and smooth. As I mentioned earlier I am hoping RI driveshaft and spin it and we can see it and get his opinion.

Almost exact Same story as blue968 here, except I bought it in New England but could not test it to Interstate speeds. Propshaft will be changed soon. What surprises me in the case of blue968 is that the TSB does not mention MY 2006. I know my own VIN is included in it though.

So I got my lesson and will NEVER buy a used car again without taking it to Interstate speeds.
