Default accessory belt life?

Search of forum revealed no information about how long the serpentine belt is supposed to last. I don't know any history about my car before 99K when I got it. Could it still be the original? It looks fine; no fraying or cracking. Naturally the owner's manual does not mention it. Thank you for insight. This is a 02 2.5 with manual trans.

Thomas, as a general rule, those belts are normally good for about 60K miles. But, they can last much longer. I would say since you don't know when it was last replaced, do a visual of the belt. Specifically you want to look at the V side of the belt (not the smooth side). If you are seeing large cracks or chunks of the V missing, then it is time to replace the belt. If you are just seeing small cracks and the smooth side of the belt does not appear worn, then keep going.

OK thank you for this. I do see tiny cracking on the inner surface but no gouges or large divots. Outside surface is fine.
I did finally get my copy of JTIS to run on this 'puter and wonder how hard it is to change the belt? JTIS refers to a special tool used to slacken the tension I presume. Can that be done with a big screwdriver or wonderbar?
