Most likely the driveshaft carrier bearing could use some lube. You will need a grease gun with a NEEDLE attachment to get under the rubber seal. Give it a few good pumps 90 degrees apart and wipe off any excess. It should quiet it down.
Also, if it doesn't you need to check the transfer case for oil. Do a search for transfer case and you will find a lot of info for checking, filling and draining.

Is that red or white?! Could be on to a winner there!

Alternatively, the most likely source is the intermediate prop shaft bearing. The options are

a) replace the complete propshaft

b) replace the bearing

c) Try greasing the bearing.

When we bought our x-type a couple months ago, I had that noise too. Came on here thinking it was my transfer case. Greasing that carrier bearing on the driveshaft was suggested. Bought an 18 gauge grease needle (actually bought 2... they're cheap) ... got some good grease into that bearing.....doesn't take much before you see it coming out the other side..... noise all but disappeared. After driving it a bit, I'm satisfied that it's fixed.

And the resulting quiet made it possible for me to listen for OTHER little noises.
(Our steering wheel squeaks VERY faintly....heheh)

Mine sometimes sounds like an airplane engine winding up...is that the whine you guys speak of? It is not very loud at all and hardly noticeable...just curious. I am having my transfer case gear oil replaced next week anyhow just as a peace of mind thing. Maybe I should have them shoot some grease into the carrier bearing also just for the hell of it?

peace out,
daddylogan

My understanding is that the carrier bearing is noisier when it's cooler outside. But that "airplane engine" sound is exactly how it was described to me. If you have that noise and it's going to be lifted anyways, then yes, I'd certainly have them shoot that bearing.
