Is the Alpine system in the 2004 X-Type, ipod ready?

Not iPod ready as such. You would have to add the audio connectivity module to have iPod through the stereo.

 

If I don't have a dealer nearby, is there someplace I can get one? And is it something I can do myself, or can Best Buy or someone like that do it?

 

If you have basic tools and a general knowledge of taking your vehicle apart. You can do it yourself. However if your car does not have CD changer, you would have to have dealer programme your audio unit to think that it had one.

I found a place in Amarillo that works on Jags although not a dealer. He says if I got the ACM for my ipod, he could install it. What would need to be done to program unit. Does it HAVE to be a dealer to program it? Or is that something he could do?

Indeed. You can have him install it, but definitly dealer only programming. Outside shop will not have software to programme it.
