Hope your well.
Our 2009 2.2D X-Type has suddenly stopped charging the battery with no prior warning, and no warning lights on the dash.
the RAC came out and said the alternator has packed in… which I can’t understand if there are no warning lights, but it’s definitely not charging.
* fan belt still on
* have checked fuses: all ok
* no dash warning lights on
has anyone else experienced these symptoms?
also… having replaced alternators previously in our S-Type and XF, and the new alternators having to both be genuine units to ensure no warning lights remain on the dashboards…
… does the Xtype need genuine alternator to ensure the same, or has anyone here fitted an aftermarket/ non genuine one successfully? I’ve a Hella one bought for it here but am worried in case it won’t fix it
many thanks in advance for any suggestions or help
Looks like the Diesel variants have a different alternator part number from their petrol counterparts.
C2S47100 is the part number for that alternator.
They seem to have different plug wiring to them too, as the Diesel alternators only have a 3 pin plug, compared to the petrol alternators having a 4 pin plug.
But before you jump straight to a faulty alternator, it would pay to double check Fuse F36 in the power distribution fuse box (should be 7.5 Amp for Diesel) to see if that is faulty or bad contact.
If it is not happy, the alternator does not get its B+ control supply line to pin 2 (Green wire/red stripe) to the alternator plug (DE2 in the electrical schematic).
Other than that you might want to check continuity from the remaining two wires on that plug (Brown wire and White wire) going back to the engine control module - Plug DL1 pins 47 and 112.
There is an intermediate plug in the harness DL2 that is between the engine control module plug and the alternator (at least 25 pins) and you are looking for pins 1 and 25 on that as a mid point to measure at.
