Red face Ay carumba, 2002 "X" gearbox, no drive?

Good day Jag enthusiasts

I apologise for not keeping up to date, I've missed the good banter actually, but here goes:
My 2.5 auto 2002 reg lost all drive, reverse and forwards drive and a brake pipe was noticed, burst and leaking so I had my Baby Blue recovered.
My local garage are at a loss to go further as they are unsure of the issue.

As you should be able to see there are codes reflecting an electrical issue and I have searched the forum but am going around in circles, please can some good buddy step in if you can help?

I did feel a surge pulling forward before the drive failed but it was seeming to stutter during that drive and I did take it easy.

Yours ever thankful!!!

I and skipton poets' guild will truly grateful, I promise, thanks in advance!!!

I posted an image showing the codes earlier but it's rather poor, these are the codes, as picked up by some sort of snap on reader.

P0778 Pressure control solenoid B Electrical
P0732 Gear 2 incorrect ratio
P0733 Gear 3 incorrect ratio
P0734 Gear 4 incorrect ratio
P0735 Gear 5 incorrect ratio

Thanks, Stu

Update question,

Does anyone know a Jag enthusiast or specialist near Skipton, in the Craven area or North Yorkshire?

I hope they could help?
Cheers again,
Stu

Stuart: your car has one of the early JATCO 501e units that had a week reverse solenoid; when it fails you lose both reverse and forward gears. The solenoid was redesigned and strengthened for later transmissions - and many of the early transmissions were replaced under warranty but perhaps not yours. You really need a transmission shop to look at this - the failure issue is ver well recognized not only in the Jaguar but in the othe cars that used the same transmission: VW, SEAT, Range Rover, Mazda.....

I have found interesting information and am surprised that mine wasn't replaced.
Thank you immensely for your input, I wonder if the solenoid replacement was before or after my 1st registration september 2002.

I really don't know what to do?

The info I have found on the codes is that the J-Gate needs reset with a rather long winded bulletin and that the pressure in the lines needs addressed or that the Transfer case is to blame.

Cheers Gregory

Stuart:

The early (2001-03) JATCO JF501E can have several problems. The principal one is a cracked reverse piston - this part was strengthened in a revised design - and the cracked piston can cause: no reverse, slipping reverse, poor shift from second to third, fourth and fifth and in some cases, no third, fourth or fifth gear action at all. This may be the issue with your transmission but there is the possibility of a worn clutch drum bushing which can cause "falling out of gear at a stop" or slipping on acceleration.
All of these conditions are repairable because new pressure regulator valves and torque converter regulator valves and new reverse pistons are available - but not all transmission shops can do this specialised work.
At this point you need to inquire about repair possibilities and the possibility of a refurbished replacement - One place you might check is Bristol Transmissions (bristoltransmissions.co.uk) as they do have the X-Type transfer cases and automatic transmissions. In fact, this would be my first step.

The transfer unit is not responsible for the transmission problem - but if any work is done, make sure that the transfer case fluid is changed.

Thank you Greg, Bristol is a bit far, I really appreciate your info though.
My dilema is gearbox is at lt which I think it is but whether the car is worth replacing/repairing, I just don't know.

Cheers, I'm gonna try local but Jag people

Stuart,

If it does need a refurbished or exchange transmission there's only two real choices in this country. Bristol Transmissions has already been mentioned by Gregory. The other UK specialist is Mackie Transmissions in Glasgow.

From our forum visit to Mackie, I know they are used to getting transmission units boxed up and sent for repair from garages all over the UK. If your local garage can remove/refit the unit then either of these specialists would be able to refurbish it.

Graham

below if P0778 is the main issue surely a new or reconditioned solenoid would perhaps sort the issue.
The garage I put the car too doesn't want to or can't find the issue duh!

The other faults:

P0732 Gear 2 incorrect ratio
P0733 Gear 3 incorrect ratio
P0734 Gear 4 incorrect ratio
P0735 Gear 5 incorrect ratio

In consultation with a local Jaguar buff, I have been advised to go to a Jags place near Darligton and he'll kindly drive up (he needs to go there too buy a second hand gearbox and he also has a mate to fit it... Job done, but will that work?

I absolutely have no idea, any help appreciated?

Thaks in advance, Ladies and Gents!!! Stuart

Hi again guys, is the solenoid the issue causing the gears to slip, or is there something else?
I don't have the mechanical or electrical savvy to understand this at all.

Will swapping the gearbox sort it, or is the solenoid separate from the gearbox?

Cheers Paulc732,

Much obliged, my friend, I'm going to look at this in detail and refer to the Haynes manual for more detail before I do anything drastic.
I did nplg qite a few relays, fuses and reset the battery and the car drove fine, but not far, the next day the fault returned, so I am not pshing it just now.

Thank you very much, I now have a lot more information now which is essentially what I required.
I want to do the J Gate reset bt now I realise I need ramps!!!

Please watch this space good Jag friends, I will need more help?

Thanks to you Paulc732 qnd this great forum

Hi guys,

I have had the x type into a local garage I shall not name and have found the following after a diagnostic test:

Fault PO 1647 which I believe to be 02 censor bank 1
PO 0778 which is fluid control pressure solenoid B electrical
P0 0733 and PO 0734 which is incorrect gear ratio 3 and 4.

My dilema is the 02 censor falt, can this affect the other faults plus the car is still in limp mode and the car will drive in DRIVE for a little while before I shift into manual 2.

I really need help? Thanks in advance
Stuart

Also what I shold have stated is my transmission box was running on a near to dry basis and I don't actually know how long.
On opening the gearbox, I realised that only 2.4 litres came out.
I have since filled it with dexron III and added 7.4 litres.
