Default Black smoke, burning smell and heat from back wheels

Hi guys,
I wonder if you can help. I have an 08 X type. A month or so ago I noticed that the car was struggling on hills, the acceleration wasn't great and it just didn't feel right. Then it started kicking out black smoke on acceleration, first a little and then a lot.
I changed the ERG valve and had it carbon cleaned. It was OK for a few days. It ran better and the smoke seemed to stop. It still didn't feel great but it was better.
However I've started to notice that it is struggling to accelerate sgain, kicks out black smoke on high revs and seems to consistently smoke (might be grey or whit or even a low amount of black, it's hard to tell) when it gets up to 60mph. The fuel consumption seems really high too.
I got out of it tonight and there was a burning smell and there was quite a lot of heat coming out from around the back wheels. I don't want to change cars but I can't keep throwing money at it. I was wondering if changing the air filter would help or even if it will get better as the system clears out (that might be optimistic). Anyone got any thoughts?

Do a search for "Mr Muscle" fix. Google also has it for a Mondeo which is exact to the diesel X.

IF...if, the rear wheels are truly heating up, you most likely have a sticking brake caliper(s). Easy to check, not driven in a while = cold. Drive it a bit put hand near the actual metal wheel is one (or both) way hot?

Thank you so much. I will check it out. I love my car but its costing me a fortune...I guess we all need a bit of extra maintenance as we get Iolder though so I can't hold it against her too much!
