Default Buying an 04 this week...

Hello all,

After much going back and forth I am (God willing) getting my X this week. I was originally going for a manual, but finding the right combo of miles, color, location and price was too difficult.

The 2 cars I am hoping to buy are BRG cars, both between 60-65k miles and both going for around 7800. My maximum is 7200 which I think I can negotiate down.

I would greatly appreciate your opinions on the price and what I should look, listen and feel for when buying the car.

Thanks!

That's not too bad, I paid less for mine but mine has a lot more miles. btw, you already have two of the Jags I desperately want, in the best color to have a Jag...and now you're getting the 3rd I've always wanted...at least I have my X already haha. Good luck with the negotiations. I'd love to see a pic of all 3 once you get it!

Justin, Thanks for your reply.

Technically this is my first "used" Jaguar since the XJS and E type where my grandfathers from new. This does have me a but nervous, but nothing is risk free. I look forward to taking a picture of all 3 myself.

I know to look for oil pan weeps, but frankly I have no idea how to tell if the transfer case is good or bad. No AWD experience.

As long as its not leaking or making noise its kind of hard to tell. In 04 they got an update that is supposed to improve the transfer case and trans. I'm not sure exactly when in 04 they did the trans and transfer case updates, but the early 04s still have the single cup holder center consoles and the updated ones have the dual cup holders, the steering wheels are different too.

That's awesome that those cars are also family heirlooms.

Need help quick here.

I know we can't diagnose cars over the Internet, but it helps to have the input of y'all that already own them.

Test drive one of the 04's with 61k miles. Rearview mirror missing. Vents looked messed up as in broken (1 vent) . Body and interior where fine. What really worried me was the A/C. It seemed to go back and forth between freezing and mediocre. I drove it for a good 10 minutes and it seemed to drive fine. No slipping or wierd noises. Not as powerful as I had hoped for but adequate. No leaks that I could find under the car

Please help

the A/C going back and forth between freezing and mediocre 9 out of 10 times is just low on freeon. as for the mirror and vents I should have some extra of those. If your intrested. Let me know. These cars are quick but they were built for handling in the ice and snow. There are a lot of winding roads by methat my kitty loves to play on. Cant wait to get the other 2 on the road. Have fun with your quest to your X type.

Good Luck,
The Dr.

Thanks for your reply. I was worried that the A/C was a flap that required major work or maybe a new computer. I had forgotten how stressful it can be to buy a used car. The only thing that is putting me of about this car is that it does not seem to have led a "sheltered" life. I have to say I have seen cars with many more miles that look like "new" on the inside and out. This car looks pretty nice considering its age, and the mileage is really good.

Oh, what to do!?

I agree. Finding a BRG one , 2003 and up, 70k miles or less and cost less than 7100 has been impossible.

Yeah, I had a hard time finding a 5 speed in BRG I could afford...and, mine has 170k miles...haha. Runs great though and was well maintained. I'm blessed to have found it.

My mechanic says that there is really no way to tell if the transfer case or tranny is good or bad until it fails. If it feels good, then it's good....at that time. The car felt fine to me except for the A/C. I am hoping that at 61k miles the car is still safe from such failures. If I get it I will change the transmission fluid and transfer case fluid within the month.

Default Got it!

Well, went ahead and got the 04. It's 62k miles. She needs a rearview mirror and little things that don't work, but the drivetrain seems pretty solid. I was stuck in 1 hour traffic due to a overturned 18 wheeler and she was perfectly fine. The ac turns out was fine. It just seems to take a little while to cool down.

Thanks.

I imagine I should immediately take care of the transmission oil and transfer case oil at 62k miles!
